What Pickup Combination for Traditional (British) Heavy Metal ?

Re: What Pickup Combination for Traditional (British) Heavy Metal ?

Let me add that Deep Purple, which were considered metal, had an entirely different formula as well. It included a Treble Booster, too. Blackmore's early sounds were a 335 into an AC30 (my favorite Blackmore sounds, actually).

I think for Glen Tipton it was a Rangemaster into the Normal channel of a plexi for the earlier albums. Later Painkiller era, I'm sure it was a bunch of other rack stuff like a jmp1, etc...

Iron maiden used MXR distortion + into Marshall's and sometimes Hiwatt's for the earlier stuff, and then later of course all sorts of rack gear including also JMP1's. If you take a listen to isolated guitar tone on some of Maidens albums (power slave comes to mind), it sounds horrid!, but it works well in the mix. That's one thing a lot of people overlook when they are trying to cop tone from albums.
