Re: What pickups did Vinnie Moore use on Mind's Eye?

Wow....thanks everyone for all of the kind words. It really means alot. And......thanks Matt for letting me know about this thread. This is my first time here.

Regarding the pickups - I used a double whammy in bridge and al dimeola neck for time odyssey and meltdown. For Mind's Eye it was a dimeola neck also and I am about 95% sure that it was a dbl whammy in the bridge. I am not 100% certain that the whammy was available at that time but i am pretty sure it was. Time O. and Meltdown were better sounding records in my opinion but that is because we had more time for those. Minds Eye was recorded and mixed in 11 days. I had 4 days to do all rhythms, melodies, harmonies and solos. It was insane. I could never do that again. I have always thought that the guitar on my demos for that record were way better. Not too bad for a first record though I guess. Learned a lot from that one. Mainly - that I need more than 4 freakin days to make a record. Hahahahaha!

Ironically, the heartfields were never used on any of my records. I didn't start using them until after meltdown was recorded. I used them on that tour though. By the time I recorded Out of Nowhere, I was playing a fender strat. Heartfields weren't being made anymore. For the Maze, Defying Gravity, Live, and UFO records, it was a music man guitar with dp 181's in the middle and neck, and a custom bridge called the sonnicaster.

So.......there's a lot of useless information for ya. Hahahahaha.

Great to see more and more people into playing their guitars again. For a while there I was thinking about switching over to scratching on the turntable. Those cats get more chicks. Harharhar!

Thanks again everybody. If ya ever have any questions, you can always reach me at my forum. www.vinniemoore.com
I just finished recording a new UFO record that is coming out in September and am also finishing up a new solo record that will be out as soon as I can finish. (Gratuitous plug. ha)

Cheers
Vinnie Moore

Re: What pickups did Vinnie Moore use on Mind's Eye?

Vinnie, I'd be very interested in knowing what gear was used on Meltdown. That's one of my all-time favorite guitar CDs. It was cool to see that John 5 also mentions this as one of his favorites in a recent guitar magazine.

Heck, I even have two copies of the the OOP Meltdown Hal Leonard tablature book. I jumped on another copy I'd spotted at a local store as my original copy is a bit beat-up.

Yeah, there are some of us out here that carried a torch throughout the Dark Ages when shred was decreed uncool and fumble-fingered slackers ruled the airwaves. I'm just as happy to see younger guys getting into quality guitar playing as anyone.

Re: What pickups did Vinnie Moore use on Mind's Eye?

Vinman,

Thanks for posting. It's great to see the pros drop in occasionally. I bought Mind's Eye after hearing the Guitar Player Soundpage of Daydream. :cool3: tune. I really liked the slower tunes on T.O. FWIW, we really don't mind personal plugs, as long as it doesn't cross into SPAM territory. Frankly, I consider it useful info. Again, thanks for dropping in.

Matt: Thanks for inviting Vinnie. Any chance of getting Tony to join us? Maybe he and Vinnie can discuss recording/playing together (hint, hint).

Wow, Vinman stopped by! That just made my whole day!

Re: What pickups did Vinnie Moore use on Mind's Eye?

Wow. Thanks for stopping by, Vinnie. And thanks for sharing that bit of info. First time I heard your playing I was just starting out and listening to Westwood 1's Metal Shop with Charlie Kendall (my God I can't believe I remember the host's name....lol). He played a track of Mind's Eye. I need another copy since I wore out the cassette I bought back then. That is one of the few instrumental albums I still enjoy. Great stuff.

Re: What pickups did Vinnie Moore use on Mind's Eye?

I had never heard Vinnie before I saw him with UFO @ Hampton Beach and I liked him a lot. He was very friendly and appreciative to the fans, too.

Vinnie, if you are reading this, who is playing drums on the UFO album?

Thanks man, I listen to those three CD's usually once a day. Thoses three CD's you listed with the addition of Prepetual burn are the absolute best neoclassical shred albums out right now.

Cool! That's good stuff!

Now get Born Under A Bad Sign by Albert King and Live At The Regal by BB King. :laugh2: Maybe Texas Flood or In Step by SRV too.

You know...just for a little balance.

It's all good! :)

You can lift people's spirits with a million notes...or you can do it with just a few notes and a soulful groove too! :)

The guys like the million notes...but the girls seem to like the "just a few notes and a soulful groove" approach. :laugh2:

Lol I love blues but I'm really terrible at playing it, plus I have that famous swarm of bees tone. I bought Texas Flood before I picked up my first shred album I remember correctly.

Ah, don't worry about it... That's why I suggested some blues CD's. Well shoot man...just slow it down, clean up your tone a little and I'll bet you'll be playing both styles before long. :)

Re: What pickups did Vinnie Moore use on Mind's Eye?

Lew is banned from this thread.:lame: :smash: :argh: :cussing:

And welcome to the forums Vinnie! (I feel so cool saying that!!!!!!!!! - get with the courtesy bros!!!!). I feel like I'm part of a moment!!!! Stop by any time to talk tone...There were a ton of shred platters that weren't worth mentioning, but even in four days that one is still memorable.

Now - back to the Lew bashing...

Ouch! :laugh2:

I like it all. I've got some Vinnie, some Yngwie, some Paul Gilbert, some Satriani.....and lots and lots of BB King in my collection! :laugh2:

I like the virtuoso guitar players...just can't stand most of the singers in that genre.

It's all good...except for that Micheal Angelo kind of stuff. :eek13: That's not music so much as entertainment...like jugglers or contortionists or guitar as an athletic event.

Ahh - Paul Gilbert w/ Racer X! A fourth entry on my list of worthy 80's neo-classical-metal-fusion. Lew's allowed back in. But Gilbert isn't posting here is he! And you probably scared Vinnie off with that old man slow hand twangy crap reference!!!!

And for the record - YOU forgot to mention early ZZ Top - HAH! Now back to something with a beat you can slam your head to...

Re: What pickups did Vinnie Moore use on Mind's Eye?

Hey - How different is an Al Di model vs a Super D? Al used em both...Good question! Anyone - or does that need a new post?

Re: What pickups did Vinnie Moore use on Mind's Eye?

One thing I always liked about Vinnie was his ability to play long lines seamlessly, blending all kinds of approaches together so well that it never sounded like a bunch of licks stuck together.

I do prefer his sound from the 90s onward, though...

I used a Di Meola bridge for years. It is a very clear articulate pickup but low output. A sweeter version of the duncan jazz pickup. I still have that pickup in fact. I liked it a lot, but it lacked the edge sometimes. I would say it would be a good pickup to replicate Vinnie's tone on Time Odyssey actually though he obviously used some different pickups.

Speaking of albums make sure you check out Vinnie's Maze album. Not as well known but a very good album as well. Shrapnel and KNAC...good times.

And to Vinnie Moore...very cool of you to stop by and clarify what you used.

Re: What pickups did Vinnie Moore use on Mind's Eye?

Reviving a super old thread I know. Hell, 15 year old me is in here! I am putting this in THIS thread since it is a top hit for Viniie Moore Mind's Eye Tone searches. I have attached an article from a 1987 issue of Guitarist magazine here (which I took from http://z15.invisionfree.com/neoclassicalmetal/ar/t898.htm in case this link goes down as its already been moved before).

To summarize:

-See above for pickups according to Vinnie. At the time of this article (about a year after the albums release, and you can assume the interview was awhile before that as well) he states he is using an Ibanez Prototype with Double Whammy and Al Di Meola (or similiar custom) pickups.

-FOR THE RECORD "...I used Tony Macalpine's Peavey Amp (a Peavey VTX Classic Series 65 Watt head Ed.) for some of the leads and a Marshall for the rest. I did all the rhythm tracks on the album with a Marshall and also a Rockman. NO LANEYS HERE (I've read Laney AOR's many times referring to this album).

-this would be the same amp Tony used on Maximum security BTW.

-He also states the majority of his distortion is coming from an Ibanez Super Metal (10 Series) and even shares some settings of pedal/ amp etc.

This is a great interview, period! Apologies again for the necro thread, just trying to add more 'correct' info.

Re: What pickups did Vinnie Moore use on Mind's Eye?

Wow...

I "thought" I'd read that most of the Shrapnel guys were using close-ish rigs, via Mike Varney.

I remember seeing him in the Spotlight column,& the Pepsi commercial.

Feck,I'm old...
