What pickups do you want to try right now?

Re: What pickups do you want to try right now?

FWIW I removed my Fishman Moderns (tried a classic neck too) and use a DiMarzio Dreamcatcher and Liquifire now. Much more natural sounding to me. I have to admit I also don't like EMGs much either though.

Re: What pickups do you want to try right now?

I'm unsure about the Fishman Fluences myself. They seem to have even less low-end than EMG 81, which is a already a very focused (not to say thin) pickup!

I've read the Fluence Fluence Alnico is pretty cool in the bridge too.

Charlie Christian
P-90 staple (the vintage 50’s type)

Full shred set
Screamin demon set (have a bridge but can’t install - it’s drilled for direct mount)
PATB variants (have a -3 but need a ring to mount it)

All DiMarzio PAF variants (have tried a neck 36th only)

Jimi set
Psychedelic set
All the SSL variants (stack and single)
Antiquity II Surfers

Deathbuckers

Re: What pickups do you want to try right now?

Oh and to answer the OP's question: I'm interested in the Red Devil set. Alnico magnets in them have me intrigued.

Re: What pickups do you want to try right now?

Well this was a quick 180...

I tried recording something with my Eclipse with an Evo + PAF Pro and didn't like the tone I was getting. I had long been planning to swap in the Distortion set that I previously had in a Les Paul that I sold... But I really wasn't digging it in this guitar, despite how much I enjoyed it in that Les Paul.

So I ordered an EMG 57/66 set. After reading more reviews, I decided against the Fluence modern since many people described it as a brighter EMG 81, whereas the 57 was consistently described as being more balanced and more open, while still being reasonably tight. I'll post a review after I test them out.

Looking forward to reading what you think, and hearing how they sound for you. I have a set of those that came with my LTD H7, but they'd been replaced with a Custom and 59 (which I love too much to try and swap back in the EMGs and related electronics). If I had a 7 that needed pups, I might go with them before buying anything else, but I have Imperiums in my other 7 and can't justify buying a 3rd just for that.

Re: What pickups do you want to try right now?

Except for the P-Rails, I have not put any "newer" designed SD pickups in a guitar. I have a Screamin' Demon bridge and Full Shred neck sitting on my parts shelf which I have been wanting to try out. About the only guitar I could try them in is my Lead III and I am not sure how they would pair in that or how they might sound when split.

What'd you think of them before swapping them out?

I'm trying to keep my expectations to a minimum. Part of the reason I went with another set of EMGs is that I still have the wiring harness from the stock 81/60 set, so I can plug these in without touching the rest of the included electronics, which'll allow me to return them if I don't like them. We don't have the Duncan exchange policy in Canada, so this is the only way I can try a pickup and still return it.

If I find them too abrasive like the 81/60 still, maybe I'll try a Pegasus+ Sentient or something similar next.

Re: What pickups do you want to try right now?

I'd like to try some Antiquity strat pickups, the filtertron sounding humbuckers and find something for my 335 that I love.

Re: What pickups do you want to try right now?

Not many, really. I only have 2 guitars that I am less than happy with, or feel they need something different. But even then, I weigh the cost of new pickups and the pain to swap them and hold off.

I have a set of harmonic design vintage plus tele pickups that are amazing. This tele set makes me want to try their p90s, z90s, and vintage plus strat pickups.

Lace ps900/905 hum cancelling p90s. I like their holy grails, and the ps900 set is the same thing in p90 size.

All sorts of h sized p90s. It took me 20 years to discover these gems.

I wanna try a super d in my ltd eclipse to go with the 36th neck in there. I need to experience that classic sound once in my life.

I am all about treble bleed circuits and tone cap changes these days. Some significant changes here! Cheap too.

Re: What pickups do you want to try right now?

I also have never owned a guitar with P-90s in it, and would like to try 'em.

Related tangent: Do you guys think they're generally more suited for 500k or 250k volume pots?

Re: What pickups do you want to try right now?

The Full Shred bridge, I actually ordered from a distributor here in Mexico but the import shipment seems to be on stand by in CA. :(

Also wanna try the STK-S4 neck. A couple of months ago I tried the SSL-6 in neck with my existing STK-S6 in bridge, the SSL-6 sounds louder and has too much bass. Funny thing is I have the impression the STK-S6 in neck position sounds with a bit less output and less bass.

Re: What pickups do you want to try right now?

I think I would probably enjoy the Saturday Night Specials.

Re: What pickups do you want to try right now?

Pegasus/Sentient - I have a Schenker V that is crying out for something progressive.

A2P's - Not really "trying out" but time to get a set back into a Tiger Eye Cadillac.

I think I'd love to have some WLH's in something classic.

Re: What pickups do you want to try right now?

I have a DiMarzio Fred someone gave me. I’m curious enough, but I just don’t have a guitar to put it in.

I’d be interested in the Saturday Night Specials. I’d put them in my amber flame Epi Les Paul Custom.

if it works out, I've been pretty happy with a Fred as a neck pickup.
and I cannot recommend the saturday night specials enough. great pickups.

Re: What pickups do you want to try right now?

I've been really loving the Custom 5 in the bridge, and I tried the 59' in the neck with it and realized the 59 just has this beautiful wind that I love the sounds of it. And it got me really wanting to try a 59 in the bridge with it. I do play metal but I think I could get away with it.. Lose some heat, gain some tonal goodness , heartiness and dynamics and such ?hmmm. Would be fun to try out

I'm also gassing hard to try out a full shred set in my Ibanez. Then I'd have the perfectly contrasting 2 guitar combo. Stimulus cheque says go for it but thankfully I have overpowered the gas and avoided the temptation. Some day I will try it though.

Re: What pickups do you want to try right now?

Any pickup I can find that's like an SH-5 but without so much brittle top-end and high mids....the search is not going well

That was basically my problem with SH5 and cured it by switching to a Custom 5 - for me a huge improvement cause I didn't like that brittle top end. Have you looked into that yet ? And technically all you need to do is swap your magnet !
