What pickups for a 335 type?

I will be replacing the pickups in a Sheraton II and would like your input.

I want to stay in the vintage range but like to kick it a little into overdrive sometimes (think Kings of Leon and Foo Fighters).

I don't want muddy or in-articulate pickups either (especially in the neck). Any thoughts?

Presumably, you want to stick with gold-plated, metal-covered 'buckers?

I'd go for a Pearly Gates neck and, er, anybody else? Blueman?

Re: What pickups for a 335 type?

I have an Epi Dot that I put a '59 neck and Seth Lover bridge into. The difference was night and day between the old pickups (which were muddy and uninspiring). I would recommend a '59 set, you will definitely be able to cop Kings of Leon type sounds with that.

Re: What pickups for a 335 type?

I used a '59n and JB combo for several years in my sheraton, works great for the sound you described. Last year I took those out and put in a P-Rails set and I like them as well. The P-Rails get a wider variety of tones through coil splitting/combining, but for pure humbucker goodness the 59/JB did a great job. The 59n was nice and round on solos, JB made for some razor-edged riffing and the combined position (in addition to the 4 knobs) was very usable for chording.

Edit: both pickups were covered. I bought the JB with a gold cover, but couldn't find a covered '59 so I used the Epi cover from the neck pickup. Worked fine.

Re: What pickups for a 335 type?

Nope, sounded fine. I like to roll my tone knobs around, so maybe that had a bit to do with it. Volume-wise the two pickups matched well with each other (some height adjustments required, nothing drastic).

Re: What pickups for a 335 type?

I had a semi-hollow with an A2Pro and a CC for a while. The pickups sounded fab, but the neck joined the body at like the 14th or 15th fret and it was kinda an uncofortable guitar to play so I ditched it.

If I had a Dot today I wouldn't hesitate to throw the same combo in. Something about 335 copies strikes me as being a bit bright, but with a good resonant low end, so I chose alnico II pickups to put everything in balance, and it seemed to work. The CC is warm and hot but don't forget your volume knob backed off a touch can clean it up. The CC can really rock.

So, the JB wasn't too high an output?

I've got a 68 Epi Casino with a JB bridge. If you click on my links below, there's a song called "Let's Call It A Day" where I used that guitar exclusively. Not a great production, but it should give you an idea of what type of sound you'll get. Used a Vox amp model for that tune.

If you're looking for a Seth Lover bridge, I've got a nickel one on the market :naughty:

Pair of 59's

No extra kick...but I still say pair of 59's

Re: What pickups for a 335 type?

I have Wolfetones in my 339 and LOVE THEM. I didn't buy them - the guitar came to me with them installed - but they are great, balanced, sensitive pickups with a nice medium-low output (Bridge is 9.6k) that sound fantastic clean or under any amount of gain.

The bridge is called the Marshallhead and the neck is a Dr. Vintage, I think.

Re: What pickups for a 335 type?

Those stock Epi PU's gotta go!

I have a Sheraton with a C5/'59N that sounds great, one of my best sounding guitars. My 'go to' 335. For a vintage vibe, a good PAF set, like '59's or PG's are ideal.

For a bridge PU between those, I like a medium-output DiMarzio Fred with two 250K's.

Re: What pickups for a 335 type?

at the mo i've got a C5/59 hybrid in the bridge and a jazz in the neck, i've tried quite a few pickups in it over the years. high out put pickups are just awful (even if they dont feedback you lose some of the nice natural hollowbody tone) 59's sounded really good in mine but was a tad bright in the bridge with 500k pots. the 59' can handle foo fighters/kings of leon no problem. even if you wanted to go a bit heavier they can handle it and they clean up well too.

Re: What pickups for a 335 type?

I tried a few and ended up with Gibson Burstbucker Pros --- they are a little pricy, but they are damn good, legit PAFs.

They are AlNiCo 5 and sound like this.

thats a mahogany dot studio, sheraton II's are made of maple. 2 different guitars but that doesn't mean they will sound bad in a sheraton 2, just different

Re: What pickups for a 335 type?

Have you tried 250K's on your '59B? Works great for me.
no, i have thought about it but i dont have any lying around at the mo, i want to change all the stock wiring and pots soon anyway so ill give it a go.
i put the pickups in and made the stock tone pots "no load" pots while i was in there so that didn't help lol
