What pickups for a 335 type?

Re: What pickups for a 335 type?

I'm not a fan of Alnico V in these semi-hollow guitars. So, I'd go with an Alnico II option, like the Gibson Classic 57 and Gibson Classic 57+

no, i have thought about it but i dont have any lying around at the mo, i want to change all the stock wiring and pots soon anyway so ill give it a go.
i put the pickups in and made the stock tone pots "no load" pots while i was in there so that didn't help lol

'No load' is fine for the neck, but makes the bridge pretty bright.

Re: What pickups for a 335 type?

thats a mahogany dot studio, sheraton II's are made of maple. 2 different guitars but that doesn't mean they will sound bad in a sheraton 2, just different

really it's a difference in the center block with the dot's being mahogany and the sheratons being maple. the basic construction of laminated top, back, sides, and maple necks is the same so there's really not that much difference in tone than the dot being ever so slightly warmer with a very slight sag, and the sheraton being just a tad brighter and stiffer in feel.

that said, i really liked the phat cat in the neck and PG bridge setup i had for a while. i changed the magnets from a2 to a5/a2 in the phat cat, and a4 in the bridge because i didn't like the highs as rounded. it was a cool combo, but the guitar itself needed some work i couldn't do, so i pulled the set and use it in my mockingbird now. but, i really liked the tones i was getting-fat and bright with lots of raunchy breakup in the bridge, with more of the same along with good clarity in the neck.

I'm also using Gibson 57n & 57+b in my ES 335 and I love it. They're the perfect blend of vintage tone and modern push. They also sound great clean as well.

Howdy,

Have you considered SD '59s? I'm a Keith Richards disciple and they sound just fine in my old ES-335. Of course they look better with covers, but that's another discussion..

Get Seymour to put some cover on, if you prefer that look !

The '59 set gets my vote for that 335 !

+1. I have a '59 in the bridge and a Jazz in the neck of my Epi Dot. So I would vote for either the '59 set or '59 Jazz combo. I can honestly say I wouldn't care for an a2 humbucker in that guitar at all, not even the PGs.
