What pickups for Schecter Avenger Atx ?

Hi,

I recently bought a Schecter Avenger Blackjack ATX 2011, but didn't like the active SD Blackouts that came stock with it. I replaced them with a SD Invader (changed the pots to 500k) in the bridge and nothing in the neck yet .. but I'm still not sure about the Invader. I feel like the sound coming out of the Avenger is too much bassy, almost muddy. I play mostly nu-metal/punk/punk-rock (Drop Tunings) with it, but I think I should maybe go with a lower output pickup, and let my Blackstar HT Studio 20 give distortion (I will maybe add a pedal later on).

I want a brighter sound, with more treble and less bass. Since the Avenger is an all mahogany guitar, it tends to make the sound darker...

I was thinking the Alternative 8 or the Custom Custom or the Black Winter for the bridge, and maybe the Full Shred or Jazz for the neck. I would like to try Bare Knuckle PUs too, but they are expensive.

Any advice or suggestions ? Thanks for reading this :)

I should add that the guitar has Ebony Fingerboard. I haven't try to lower it yet to see if it can be clearer. Maybe I don't have the right amps setting or the right amp at all, I'm going to investigate in this way before changing it to anything else. I'm not home until Xmas though so ... might take a while to solve this «Finding the good sound» issue :P . But I will read the suggestions and the comments so it can help me make a better choice later this year hopefully.

Black Winter or a Distortion.

Thanks for responding. I looked up those two pickups (DIstortion and BWinter) but wasn't too sure about going for another Ceramic Magnet PU. From what I heard, it seems they are less flexible/versatile than Alnico 5. Is it only me ? I like playing High Gain sound for nu-metal, but sometimes I need more of a crunchy punky sound, and I found that the Invader is too brutal to get me there. Anyway, I'll have to try them out to really tell which one I like the most. I'll consider Disto and Black Winter.

I have an invader set in an LTD H1001NT and they are really bassy in the bridge.
If I don't roll the lows down and adjust the resonance in my EVH 5150iii it almost sounds like its a subwoofer in drop d half step and drop c is worse. I like it though after I dialed it in.

Exactly my concern here, it has a lot of Bass, even If I roll down the Bass Knob on my amp ... I want a clearer/brighter sound when playing Drop C or Drop C#. If I had more money right now I would check out for Lace PUs too maybe.

Here I like the Black Winter, the Pegasus, or if you really want much less mids, the Custom 5. The Custom 5 is really great distorted, and perfect for mid-heavy guitars. The open sound has great low end, and enough highs to cut through.

Thanks for your answer, I'm really hesitating between the Distortion or the Custom 5 or Custom Custom. I will probably have to choose one and test it ... and change if it's not the right pickup for me :)

Re: What pickups for Schecter Avenger Atx ?

The Custom Custom might give you too much of the mid thing you don't want. The Distortion is a lot of highs. The C5 is more of a scooped sound- you get highs and bass. My guess is that you'd like the C5.

Re: What pickups for Schecter Avenger Atx ?

When I read Black Winter Pickups I automatically think of Black Mean Death Metal ... can someone tell me I'm wrong ? Say I want to play Nu-Metal/Heavy Metal/Hard Rock Tuned to Drop C or C# (Disturbed, Bullet For My Valentine, System Of A Down, Three Days Grace, Linkin Park, etc)

Thanks again for the replies, I'm going to keep reading on forums and listening to soundclips until I order my pickups :P

The black winter is an extremely versatile pickup. It is my favorite pickup. I don't play metal generally.
