what pickups would go well with a gibson explorer with a mahogany body, and rosewood fretboard (i think its a maple neck, but its finished so theres no telling by looks). it would be for some metal, but more like heavy rock. i was thinking '59 neck fo sho, but either a jb bridge or a custom bridge. or a set of bill lawrence's. those are the choices.

I like the Pearly Gates in the neck and the Custom in the bridge for heavier rock styles.

The Custom and a 59n would work well but so would a JB. The Custom is a fav in mahogany around here.

I'd stick a Distortion set in it.

What would the Custom bring to the party in a mahogony guitar? I've got a mahogony guild with 2 '59s, but wouldn't mind trying something different.

The Custom is modern hard rock. Crisp, powerful, good bass but not flabby, some treble. As opposed to the JB which has a signature high mids bump that can cut through. It sounds good for crunchy rhythm and leads that stand out. To me the Custom sounds late 90's/early 00's, and the JB is all 80's. I need to try the Distortion, I think those three are the triple threat of hard rock pickups.

Ok, here's a thought. My favorite sounding guitar is a mahogny bodied guitar with Tele pickups (maple neck & rosewood board.) It's got a JD Tele pickup at the bridge.

My mahogony Guild is loaded with 59's now, & it sounds good, not great. I wish it had a little more of the old mids. I noticed on the SD specs page that the Custom has a similar tone chart & resonant peak to the JD. Maybe the Custom is worth a shot?
