What pickups were/are used by Duane Allman and Warren Haynes?

Re: What pickups were/are used by Duane Allman and Warren Haynes?

Seth Lovers, Antiquitys, Pearly Gates...all great and very similar pickups.

Nickel covered Pearlys get the sound I'm looking for. I like them uncovered too but covered PG's sound sweeter to me.

Does take a certain picking style and the ability to use your guitar's tone control to create that "vocal" tone...or what Clapton called "Woman Tone".

Worth working on if you haven't developed that ability.

This guy has it down:

Love that tone. Wonder what he's playing through?

Every time Lew, whether it's PU's, pots, acoustic guitars, etc. Part of your charm. Gotta love it.

I know you have a lot of ego wrapped up in passing yourself off as being some sort of pickup guru.

But it wouldn't hurt you to work on your picking, your touch, your ability to use the guitar's tone controls during a solo and to learn to play a little better.

Would give more credibility to your comments and gear reviews.

Because so much of the "thin tone" and excess brightness that you complain about in certain pickups is actually the sound of your own limited technique.

That would also be the reason you don't like Stratocasters or Telecasters or single coil pickups.

It takes a nice touch to get a nice sound out of a Strat or Tele.

Of course you could just crank up the bass and turn the treble down to zero...

And there he goes taking shots again. Why stick to gear talk when you can insult someone on a personal level? We've come to know and love this feistiness from you. ;)

OP... Any of the Duncan PAF style pickups will get you in the ballpark. The rest is on your playing. If you can work the tone and volume pots, there are tons of tones in every guitar. :) Good luck with your tone search.

I think Warren uses the Burstbucker 1 and 2 in his Gibson Signature Les Paul and 335. I loved the Haynes 335s, and I have the Burstbucker sets in my Historic Les Pauls. I have Seths and Ants, but these guitars get me closest to Duane's tone. But I have to agree that a lot of his tone was in his DNA.

Great player.

+1. I think BB's are best of the Gibson PAF's I've owned, although I haven't yet tried the several new ones they came out with a couple years ago (like the one with A3's, etc).

warren has bb1 & bb2 in his gibson signature guitars and im sure he uses them pretty stock but many of his les paulsbefore the sig models had swapped out pups. my favorite is from the re-formed abb and early mule era and had a 496r and pgb.

Re: What pickups were/are used by Duane Allman and Warren Haynes?

its not 6.5k. its 6.5 on a scale of 1-12 or something silly like that.

bb1 is high 7's usually, bb2 is low/mid 8's, bb3 is high 8's to 9k

Ah...that makes more sense.

There was a guy on the Gearpage selling a set and he described the neck pickup as being 6.5K.

I couldn't believe that so I looked it up on Gibson's website.

Guess he misunderstood too.

This link (http://forum.gibson.com/index.php?/topic/53043-gibsonepiphone-pickups-dc-resistance-values/) says the BB1 is 7.1K and the BB2 is 8.0 - 8.4K.

BB3 is 8.2 - 8.8K.

8.8K is the DC of the bridge pickup in my Custom Shop Pearly Gates set.

Re: What pickups were/are used by Duane Allman and Warren Haynes?

the last set i put in for someone was bb1 7.6k & bb2 8.2. ive seen a bb3 that was 9.1k.
