That's a good reason to me. I'd do what you said, and get the 490's and pop in A5's. I have a couple 490R's that I put A5's in, and they aren't as boomy in the low end as '59N's are. I've put UOA5's and A8's in my 490T's.

Eric's 335 is a 1963.

By that time they were all using short alnico 5 magnet and had been for a few years.

Make sure you get pickups that are not potted, and have nickel covers too...

It's a `64, but you have the rest correct.

490's are my favorite stock set of Gibson pickups, but they are slightly hot compared to Pat No. pickups. That said, they are killer in a thinline semi-hollow! I had them in my old 333, and they sounded great. It came stock with a 498 bridge pickup, but I put a 490R in instead. So it had two 490Rs in the end.
