What pickups would I find stock on a 1964 Gibson Les Paul custom??

Re: What pickups would I find stock on a 1964 Gibson Les Paul custom??

Yeah but my question isnt about the pickups. If its a SG shaped les paul then all well and good I was just curious as to what it actually is.

Hmm no it is not SG shaped. So there wasn't such a thing as a les Paul in 64? That can't be right. I'm not claiming to be an expert, I just looked up the serial number.

I'm confused or maybe my les paul history isnt so good. I thought they went to the Les Paul with an SG shape in 61? They took the Les Paul name off in 63... So what Les Paul was made in 64?

None. The OP doesn't have a SG Les Paul or a '64 Les Paul of any kind. There's been some sort of mistake.

The best way is to date it is to look in the cavity and run the serial number of the pots.

HTH,

a 64 les paul with p90's? Somethings fishy... Im willing to bet its a 50's gold top that was refinned. Gibson had the habit of re-serial numbering guitars when they were refinned. He says the tun-o-matic was installed? why? cause it originally had a wrap around.

Not to mention the "Clown burst".....that does scream 70's refinish.....Hmmmmm

I don't believe there is any such thing as a 1964 Les Paul, single cutaway or SG style. I assumed the OP had a white, 3 pickup, SG Custom from 1964 that he was referring to as being a Les Paul for some reason. But Les Paul guitars were not being made in 1964 and I doubt any SG's were being made with the Les Paul truss rod cover or Les Paul written on the pickguard material between the neck pickup and fingerboard. Here's a real 1961 SG/Les Paul Custom:

That is possibly a '55 Les Paul or older that's been refinished and had the P90's replaced with humbuckers and a tuneomatic bridge and stop tailpiece added. Hard to do because the neck angle is wrong on those early 50's Les Pauls for a tuneomatic to have enough up and down range.

Either that or it's a '56 Les Paul that's been refinished and had the P90's replaced with humbuckers and had a 60's serial number stamped on the peghead.

My guess is that when they refinished it they lost the original 50's style serial number printed on the back and replaced it with a 60's style stamped serial number. That would be my guess.

I really dont believe the OP is trying to decieve anyone. Hell he just asked about pickups so he could find some that sounded close. I was just curious about what it was thats why I asked. Odds are the OP made a mistake with the serial number or something is funky about the number. Gibson serials from that area arent 100% reliable by a long shot like Pepe said dating the pots is a better way to tell.

I wasnt trying to start anything by asking I was just curious as to what the guitar actually was.

He's 22 years old. I assumed he just didn't know much about the history of SG and Les Paul guitars.

Well you're right. Like I said, I just looked up the serial number because I was curious but I have no way of telling. Maybe you guys can tell from a few pictures.

pancake body and volute on the neck = not a '64

doesnt look like a three piece neck though

Re: What pickups would I find stock on a 1964 Gibson Les Paul custom??

I'm gonna say an early 70's Custom. Pancake body, Waffleback tuners, Clownburst finish, Volute....all tell-tale signs of that era.

Re: What pickups would I find stock on a 1964 Gibson Les Paul custom??

good to know. and if that's the case, then what pickups do you think would be in there?
Also, what's the deal with the pancake body? and what's a volute?

Look at the 5th pic down you posted...you can see a line in the middle of the body, thats a "pancake" body...Norlin era Gibson built MANY Les Pauls with this constructions, it let them use several smaller pieces of mahogany and this let them save money.

The Volute is the bump at the back of the headstock...in the late 60's Norlin got tired of the broken headstock issues and put the volute on most all Gibson guitars to reduce headstock repairs.

All these things add up to an early/mid 70's Les Paul Custom.

Those pickups are T-Tops...I'd bet a wad of cash on it, as long as they are stock.
