Im trying to upgrade a js22 dinky I have the sd hot rod set and it sounds pretty good but when i installed them I noticed alot of cheap looking pots and switches. I know its a cheap guitar I have some experience i can install the parts and make everything work but i have no idea what different combinations and processes do to the tone. If anyone can tell me a good setup for a blues rock style tone

There's not any specific setup for any music genre.
Higher rated pots make for more treble at full open......and higher capacitance means more treble cutoff when rolling down.
Then you have to decide on taper of pots. I think Audio is most often used for volumes and even tone controls.....I think this has the most gradual sweep. If you do vol swells you might want a more abrupt taper so the effect is quicker to achieve.

Cheap pots can work just as well as more expensive....but the tolerance between the actual and nominal figure can be a lot greater, plus perhaps they have a shorter life on average.

if you want a quite natural transition make sure your tone pot is audio taper, there's nothing worse than a linear taper tone pot

now if you ask me the most versatile thing for blues and rock would be a bill lawrence like pot setup, which is just using 500k push pull pots (audio taper on tone, and your fave taper for vol) and just wire them to turn into 250k pots by pulling them, this way you don't have to choose 'tween 500k or 250k

Go with the recommended 500k.

Use the knobs on the amp and the fingers for the blues/rock tone.

Another vote here for 500k. That's what I have on mine and they sound great!

I use 500k pots, and I turn those puppies often! I like the YJM Speed Pots (for volume and tone). Learning how to wire your own guitars is a great skill that will serve you a lifetime, and may earn you a few extra bucks.

I know its been awhile since ive been on here and started this thread but thanks to everyone for the advice i went with the 500ks they sound pretty good but i think im about to go with a push pull pot im having a hard time getting enough differnece in tone between the neck and bridge i may end up drilling holes and adding two more pots my dinky only has 2 pots and 3 way blade

Check out concentric pots.

Also there are a bunch of tricks you can do to get more tones out of your humbuckers. One that I'm really liking right now is a spin a split.

look at bill lawrence wirings, you can have a lot of options you may not even use with just 2 pots and a blade switch, 1st by using push pull pots on both pots, and then by using a 5 pos blade switch instead of a 3 pos one, this way you can have pos 1 to 3 as the normal, bridge, both neck, and then do some weird or crazy extra things with pos 4 and 5, like on the bill lawrence esquire wiring

I think this is really good advice!! Concentric pots are 2 in 1 pots so you won't need to drill any new holes when you want 2 extra pots in your current configuration! Highly recommended! :fing2:

my 2 cents for more tone options in that guitar; 5-way "Super Switch"
