What produces better harmonics?

Re: What produces better harmonics?

I'm not sure High output is always an indicator- though it helps. Some PAF styles are great for pinches- in the Duncan lineup, Pearlys and 59s for example.

Listen to early Scorpions material with Mathias Jabs- first 4 albums. Thats T-tops & Shaws in the Explorers, a 58 Les Paul with PAFs, and schaller Hot Stuffs in his vintage Strats.

Gary Moore used to get KILLER squealies on his 61 strat. Corridors of Power is full of them. Just forward to 1:27 take a listen to the solo, and wait for it!

Rory Gallagher got killer pinches as well with his strat.

Re: What produces better harmonics?

The AHB-2 Blackout Metal is insane for screaming harmonics & rich harmonic overtones...

...also I just put a DMT (Dean USA) "Baker Act" in the bridge of a mahogany superstrat and the harmonics/overtones are way over the top ..amazing pickup!

Re: What produces better harmonics?

Dimarzio EVO. Used one in an LP for a while, and it was a screamer. I hear the Norton screams, but I never tried it.

Re: What produces better harmonics?

Huh... I did not know that.

Yup. Mismatching the coils gives you a larger peak in the really high treble range, and that's basically where the harmonics are all at.

Re: What produces better harmonics?

Well, for now I threw in my JB that I had laying around. I really loved this pup in alder. So far so good in mahogany. Nice and thick, with nice overtones and getting better harmonics that I was with the stock ibanez pup.

Re: What produces better harmonics?

I like the patb2-bluesbucker for pinches, and the breathiness you're talking about. Those huge mids of the patb2 really punch through. I use it with 2 half size ceramics and hex polepieces in the bluesbucker coil.

The tighter, more screaming brother of that pickup is the jb/fullshred hybrid. The separation, bite and articulation and tighter low end of the fullshred, and the superharmonics, mids.and fluidy leads of the jb.

But I can get an alnico2pro,Seth,pearly, superD, or ant other pickup squeel like a pig ready for slaughter...

Matthias jabs wasn't on the first 4 scorps albums. lonesome crow, fly to the rainbow, in trance, virgin killer, taken by force, those were uli Jon roth, with the exception of the first, that was Michael schenker. Tokyo tapes, also uli. Starting with animal magnetism, then blackout, love at first sting, savage amusement, crazy world, etc etc; that's jabs.

You misread my post. I know all this except you areincorrect, Mathias & Michael played on Lovedrive (which you neglected to mention) . Michael only played on 2 tunes for positive, and he may have contributed to Coast to Coast.

Not the first 4 Scorpions albums, the first 4 Scorpions albums with Mathias Jabs.

Re: What produces better harmonics?

What about alternative 8?
I think the output and big mids on it may contribute to cutting yet punchy harmonics. I've yet try, maybe a real user could give you detailed comment.

Hmmmmmmm... That sounds like a nice pup. I may have to try building one of those.

Does well if you keep the pickup low enough. The reason EMG's are SO good at pinch harmonics is the low string pull. A-8 has a massive pull but if you drop it a little to get the sustain back it kills. I own 3 Alt 8's.
My favorite in Mahogany for pinch harmonics is a Custom Custom or JB A-2. The low string pull of the A-2 is what helps pull the harmonics out.
I have a pair of Custom Customs in my Washburn Super Strats with Mahogany bodies and they both pull harmonics like crazy.

Ohh, now I get it. I wrote that post when I wad at work, and knew about lovedrive, ofcourse, but neglected to mention it.

Re: What produces better harmonics?

Lower string pull huh? Ive never really thought about that. But I gotta know: how do I make a jb/full shred hybrid?! That sounds like an awesome pickup!
