i want one that will give me effects without shaping my guitar and amp tone.. and one that i can plug into a MIDI board so i can switch the amp and rack unit channels at the same time. and if it has a good chorus sound thats even better.. what are your guys' suggestions?

Most rack units will affect your tone at least slightly, since they generally convert an analog signal to digital, apply effects, and convert back. It's not perfect.

What sort of budget are you on? One of the better entry level units is here: http://www.tcelectronic.com/G-Major

I would look into something you can get in Canada, to get the most for your $$.

Or, something used. Lexicon, TC Electonic, Eventide all make great pro level pieces. Digitech for entry level stuff.

Also add Rocktron to that list. I use an Intellifex Ltd and it has fantastic, transparent chorus effects all the way up to an 8 voice chorus.

I'll agree with this. I have the Intellifex LTD and even though I don't use it these days, it is an excellent sounding rack unit. Highly recommended. It's not made anymore but you should be able to find a used one at a good price.
