What recorder do you guys use?

I have been looking for a good simple digital for awhile. I tried getting a Roland 1880 from a guy but it fell through. I am on a tight budget right now, spent to much money for the Froum trip, so I am looking for the lower end stuff.

I dont think I need an eight track recorder so a four would probably do. I will mostly be recording by myself or my wife and I singing. If any of you have some thing you have been thinking of selling let me know.

Check out the Tascam DP-01 series. They are very nice and and easy to use. They have more hardware-based controls (as opposed to software controls) than just about any other recorder on the market, which makes them much more user-friendly and familiar in operation. The more expensive FX version is probably worth the extra $$ overall. I got a great deal from Northern Sound and Lighting in PA (on the web -- google 'em) that made the FX cheaper than the MF price on the standard version (<$400). If you already have a mic pre and outboard effects, then you can probably go with the standard version and save $100 or so.

I just use my computer.

Check out cakewalk or magix or somthing, with a mic in on your computer you can do a lot.

Re: What recorder do you guys use?

right on with cakewalk or cubase-
easy to learn and lots of future flexility
just be sure you get a 1/2 decent external I/O box- The cheap cards with IO insde the computer chasis are usually too noisy

Re: What recorder do you guys use?

i use a tascam US-122 usb interface and right now I just have the software that came with it. The software isen't very good but the interface is work great.

Re: What recorder do you guys use?

I have a Roland VS-1880

Trust me...you'll need more than 4 tracks.

Re: What recorder do you guys use?

My drummer has an awesome Fostex 16 track that we make CD's with and stuff. It really works great. Recorders are a bitch to figure out how to use, though.

youngpup-
the reason you are getting so many different responses is that recording is an entire field unto itself and the options are pretty diverse- Although I lean on the non-linear side (computer based) there are pros and cons to all-

computer based- Practically anything is possible but you have to learn the ropes- Can be very cost effective and can produce professional quality (once you learn the ropes) There are lots of good freeware plugins for practically any effect you can imagine and if you already have a fast PC and plenty of hard drive, you can get very good 4 I/O systens with software in the $250 range- Also dont forget midi- a great tool for jamimg, learning orchestration and aragning. Computer based is always nonlinear, ie you can record the end of the song before the beginning or repeat a part or section multiple times-

Black box- these are standalone units that may be tape based or non-linear- tape only goes one direction (unless you are very good with a razor:) and you will have far less flexibility- but this is the advantage, you can be up and runnign in minutes- The more sophisticated of these almost cross the lines into computer based, including the roland unit mentioned above.

So to compare and contrast, consder the black box options if you simply want a fast recording to jam against and that's as far as you want to take it- in reality this is as far as most go anyway-

If you want to do serious demos and learn what goes on under the covers go with the computer based options-

There are a lot of pro and semipro boards out there- I've spent most of my time on protools, but always found the cubase site a good source of info of you head towrds the computer side-

good luck and have fun

Re: What recorder do you guys use?

rid- i tried n1 and didn't like it- very limited midi support and unclear interface-
Did it come up to speed with v2? I know a lot of folks that sware by sx3 being as good at a lower price but cant say that Ive had a reason to play wiht it yet-

What do you use it for?

+1. Works great for me! It's extremely easy to use and powerful. I just hook it up to the USB out on my laptop, load up Cool Edit Pro 2.0 and I'm good to go.

That's what I use with no problem. I wouldn't recommend anything less though.

Re: What recorder do you guys use?

N2 is very good, but it is not just a music suite, it is made for vid and audio.
I have no troubles the way I use it, but if I where to get more stuff done on it I am going to get an external card, since latency would horrible with the one I have now.
I have 1gig of ram for this stuff.
