Re: What recorder do you guys use?
youngpup-
the reason you are getting so many different responses is that recording is an entire field unto itself and the options are pretty diverse- Although I lean on the non-linear side (computer based) there are pros and cons to all-
computer based- Practically anything is possible but you have to learn the ropes- Can be very cost effective and can produce professional quality (once you learn the ropes) There are lots of good freeware plugins for practically any effect you can imagine and if you already have a fast PC and plenty of hard drive, you can get very good 4 I/O systens with software in the $250 range- Also dont forget midi- a great tool for jamimg, learning orchestration and aragning. Computer based is always nonlinear, ie you can record the end of the song before the beginning or repeat a part or section multiple times-
Black box- these are standalone units that may be tape based or non-linear- tape only goes one direction (unless you are very good with a razor

and you will have far less flexibility- but this is the advantage, you can be up and runnign in minutes- The more sophisticated of these almost cross the lines into computer based, including the roland unit mentioned above.
So to compare and contrast, consder the black box options if you simply want a fast recording to jam against and that's as far as you want to take it- in reality this is as far as most go anyway-
If you want to do serious demos and learn what goes on under the covers go with the computer based options-
There are a lot of pro and semipro boards out there- I've spent most of my time on protools, but always found the cubase site a good source of info of you head towrds the computer side-
good luck and have fun
