what route on a Tom Delonge Strat?

subanots

New member
saw one today with the pickguard off and it looked suspect.

The neck serial # is way different from the bodys serial # (not sure if that is normal or not) The neck has two different serial numbers on it.

Pickguard had an allparts sticker underneath.

Volume pot was used up. Resoldered, scratched up.

The body looked like it was black at one time, then re-sprayed seafoam green. Under the pickguard, there was a huge chunk of sfg paint stripped off near the ground screw. And had 3 circular divots in the treble side horn. I think those are machine marks to hold it down during some stage of the cnc process.

The pickup was all scratched up and corroded.

Bridge was odd. Saddles were unmarked (do they come with stamped saddles, I dont know) and looked older than the bridge.

The ebay listing (dont have it) stated "mint".

yeah, no.

Do these come relic'd? I have never seen one until today and I know nothing about them.

Neck was good, though!

My friend is obviously sending it back because it is obviously jacked and has bad vibes.

What is the route like on these badboys?

I kinda wish it was in better condition, so he would keep it.
The neck is sweet!

... and I like the idea of a hardtail, one bridge hb, one pot, 70s headstock, maple neck, rosewood fretboard with jumbo frets strat in Seafoam green.

I would almost prefer a rear rout, so you could have it with no pickguard.

yum.

sorry, I didnt think to take pics. :smack:

But again:

What kind of route, fellas? What do they come with from the factory?

Re: what route on a Tom Delonge Strat?

hey bro, I've got an unmolested black one but its at my parents' house ....but unfortunately I cant get to it till next week -but if no one else has helped you out by then I'll pull the pickguard and take a look (but I knew a few other guys here have gotten one recently so hopefully someone else will chime in) ...I don't believe they ever came reliced, the pickguard was pearloid 3PLY. and the neckplate has tom delonge stamped in block letters, w/ no fender logo, ...I'm 99% sure the saddles are cast/chrome plated and the tail mounts w/ 3 screws, the invader should be WHITE, black screws, silver SD logo, but I don't remember the route! If you haven't gotten other help and its not to late I'll check it for you next week....

Re: what route on a Tom Delonge Strat?

thanks bro! that was quick.

The pickguard was red tortoise'
Which I usually like, but this was really bad looking tortoise.

Re: what route on a Tom Delonge Strat?

If I recall, it's a fat strat. HSS. But that sounds like you're being had. The bridge is just a regular hardtail strat. Maybe it's a Tom delonge neck with a fat strat body. Sounds about right. I got mine at home, so I'll see it later tonight I'll check it out. Wish I could post pics.

a) Mine's a Graffiti Yellow that appears to have been reshot at the factory because it looks Seafoam under a ding.

b) The ground screw is like that....a bit of paint off.

c) 3 holes are for the CNC.

d) Mine's routed HSS but there are some variations....HSH isn't that uncommon.

Mine just says "TOM DELONGE".

Serial number's at the back of the headstock like most Mexis

Re: what route on a Tom Delonge Strat?

The only TDL Stratocaster that I recall inspecting beneath the scratchplate just had a single HB cavity and a minimal control cavity. This might have been the Squier version.

Re: what route on a Tom Delonge Strat?

Back in the day I wanted a hardtail Strat in a unique color to compliment and contrast my S/S/S Strat with a nice set of humbuckers.

My dumb ass spent twice as much money as I had to on a Warmoth rather than just getting a cheap used yellow Tom Delonge...those are cool guitars.

This has nothing to do with the topic, but if I HAD just gotten a Tom Delonge strat and changed the neck plate while i was changing the pickguard and putting new pickups in, I would definitely have something to contribute to this thread.

Re: what route on a Tom Delonge Strat?

I've had two, and I modded them both. The routing is H/S/H (on the Fender MIM, not sure about the Squier).

Re: what route on a Tom Delonge Strat?

im pretty sure the one int he giant photo above is a squier. the fenders have a shiny (pearloid?) guard.

and theres NO way the saddles are SS, mine are slightly rusted up.

ive had it for years and always clean it after use.

Re: what route on a Tom Delonge Strat?

well, he sent it back due to inaccurate listing and bad mojo. Too bad. I really liked it, and had yet to play with an invader. I told him to look for the early trem models and snatch up a few if he can find them. Seems like they would be worth a bit in a few years. Similar to the Toronado.

Well spotted, Astrozombie. Squier TDL Strats had a thick, single ply pickguard - either white or black, depending on paint colour. MIM Fender TDL Strats had a four ply, White Pearloid pickguard.

The pickup on a MIM Fender is a USA Seymour Duncan Invader whereas the Squier has a Duncan Designed clone.

The bridge saddles illustrated in the photo posted by tc are solid machined steel under chrome plating. I have seen them on the Squier version. I also recall the MIM version having solid Fender "Standard" series saddles. (I suspect that the Fender Standard Series hardware offered on MIM guitars originates in SE Asia.)

The photo was just to show how the saddles looked like, because mine look just like that, and yes the pickguard's wrong. As far as the SS thing goes, like I said, "not entirely sure". My bad bro, ironically the only thing that isn't rusty on mine are the saddles!

Edit: Found it. Copy/Paste'd the part no. from Fender. This is the bridge. Sorry for the mistake haha
