What SD's does Adam Jones Use?

Adam Jones from Tool has one of the best tones IMO, and its widely known/rumored that he uses SD's, but he never says what they are. I thinks he tries to keep it a secret or something. I was wondering if any of you guys have the 411 on his PU's?

Andersons, as in Tom Anderson Guitars from the lil town I grew up in Newbury Park CA.
Great guitars, if you can afford one.

He uses a JB in the bridge. Most of Adam's tone comes from the amps he uses. He normally runs 3 amps, one for Bass, one for mids, and one for treble.

This last tour he was using 2 Diezel VH4's and a vintage Marshall bass head. I think. Not sure on the Marshall, but positive on the Diezels.

JB, at least it used to be.

Also, correct on the amps, although it used to be one Diezel and one Dual Rectifier. For some reason I want to say the Marshall is a Super Bass converted to Super Lead. He keeps it in the freezer, I can tell you that though.

I knew about the amps, and thought it was the JB/Jazz set, but man I've never heard anyone come even close to replicating his tone.

That's probably because no one really wants to. Most don't like the JB because of the bright, nasally mids, and others don't like it because it lacks low end and sounds mushy.

I'd say that a lot of the tone comes from his amps and the Les Paul with a JB bridge. Just listen to his lead tone. What pickup other than a JB has those crazy, bright, nasally, squealing mids? The fact that he's using the JB in a LP gives him the fat sound, cause the JB isn't really a fat sounding pickup. The amps he uses surely tighten up the guitar's tone. Not many really like the sound of the JB in a Les Paul, which is probably why no one comes close to replicating the tone.

Funny, every time I put I JB in a Les Paul, I am rewarded with great tone. The JB is a great pickup, and those who don't like the mids usually aren't playing in a live situation- where the mids help you to cut through the mix.

Great point. Adam has no trouble at all getting through the mix in Tool.

Do you mean "no one" and "most" excluding you with the tool avatar?

When I say "Most don't like the JB, because..." I mean most of the people that don't like the JB don't like it for those reasons that I mentioned. Some don't like it for reasons other than that, like you, for instance. You said you liked it, except for when you try to do some palm muting in lower tunings. And "no one" meaning not many people like the sound of a JB in a Les Paul. Most like the JB in an alder bodied Strat or in a maple bodied Strat. I haven't heard of many that prefer the sound of the JB in any other axes.

I don't really have much of an opinion of the JB. I haven't really played all that many axes with one and I haven't owned any, so I haven't played an axe with one long enough to really give it fair judgment. I'm just going by what I've heard countless times on this forum by people who like it and don't like it. What I've played and what I've heard of it, I've loved, but I have to say that the JB is definitely not for everyone.

Re: What SD's does Adam Jones Use?

Right on, just the way you described his tone almost made it sound like you didn't like it, and I saw your avatar, so I was confused. I just get a little defensive when it comes to tool.
