What should I expect?

Hi! I recently acquired a Gibson 70's Tribute that has the Dirty Fingers PUP's. I don't really like them and was thinking about swapping in some 490R and 490T to keep with the whole 70's theme. What should I expect from this swap?

Re: What should I expect?

Further disappointment. The 490R will be okay but the 490T will underwhelm. Gibson makes better pickups than these two.

What could be more Seventies than Jimmy Page (Whole Lotta Humbucker pair), Duane Allman (Seths, Antiquity) or Steve Jones?

Re: What should I expect?

The 70's Gibsons featured T-Tops and Tarbacks if I remember correctly, so other options would get you closer. I'd take Funkfingers suggestions for more authentic PAF tones or of course a Super Distortion bridge and Air Classic neck for the heavier 70's tones.

Re: What should I expect?

Yea? Well I agree that the SD pickups are really nice as my friend has the Slash set and they sound great! But I kinda wanted to keep it Maybe Gibson if possible.

Re: What should I expect?

Are you hoping to emulate the musicians of the Seventies or the Gibson/Norlin production line guitars?

Re: What should I expect?

No, it's a 2013 Gibson 70's Tribute so just thinking it be nice to keep it 70's. I was thinking about the 490's cause I heard them once in an SG but the LP is a different guitar

Re: What should I expect?

If you get covered pickups no one will know who made them. Why pay more for Gibson pickups and end up with something that most likely won't sound as good as a set of Duncan PAFs?

Re: What should I expect?

What don't you like about the current set? What needs to change?

Its your guitar so you do what you want with it; however, I would say go with your ears and not with just trying to keep the 70's theme...the 2013 Tribute is not a 70's Les Paul.

My favorite Gibson LP Pickups are the 496R and 500T...they are a ceramic set so hotter. The Burstbuckers have been hit and miss for me.

Re: What should I expect?

I play more Blues/Rock so I kinda don't like the Dirty Fingers PU's (not saying they Suck) So this is my first Gibson and wanted to see if I can get that nice PAF classic sound going. And yes if I cover the pickups no one will know but I'll know hahaha (if that makes any sense) if I did get away from the 70's theme I was thinking of either the Burstbucker 2 and 3 combo or getting the 61's that came in the 2014 LPJ or was thinking of getting some Burstbucker Pro and changing the Magnets to the alnico 2 in the bridge and alnico 3 in the neck :onder:. But then again I'm no expert :nono:

Re: What should I expect?

What is it about the Dirty Fingers that you don't like?

What is wrong with your tone that makes you want to change pickups?

There are MANY "PAFs" out there...for Blues/Rock I would say the Pearly Gates set should seriously get some consideration (and they are taken off of Billy Gibbons' '59 Gibson Les Paul Pickups...while not 70's there are practically Gibson PAF pickups...)

Re: What should I expect?

I really can't put my finger on it with the Dirty Fingers but they sound kinda harsh and annoying? I don't know if I'm describing it well. I was just kinda disappointed cause I was looking forward to listening to them. One other reason I wanted to say Gibson was this quick connect thing they got going on here.

Re: What should I expect?

Dirty Fingers are high output pickups that use ceramic magnets...my personal opinion is a set like the Pearly Gates is truly what you are going for...like bluesy rock is the style of music the originals were covering lol

That being said, there are definitely more options for bluesy rock...from the Gibson pickups I really only cared for the ceramic 496R&500T set which would not be a good fit as they are on the harsh side (ceramic magnets tend to the harsh side of things.) I will defer to others for the "Gibson" option.

Best of luck!

Re: What should I expect?

My favorite Gibson PU's by far are Burstbuckers, the kind with A2 magnets. I haven't owned any of the new PAF's they introduced last year, but have read good reviews of them.

Dirty Fingers are wound hot and have ceramic magnets. As a classic rock/blues player, they don't work for me either. No need to apologize for that.

Well I thank you very much for your input, that's why I posted cause you guys know more than me!! But it would be cool to keep in Gibson (well cool for me which may imply I'm not so cool :eek13:)

Yes! So you know what I'm talking about! :headbang: And yes I agree the Burstbuckers sound great a friend of mine put the 1 and 2 into a solid body Les Paul and they sound really cool but I was wondering if the 2 and 3 would sound just a bit thicker. I don't know But yes that's kinda the sound I wanted.

Ha! "Cool" is most subjective ;)

And you are most welcome! Best of luck, hope you can find the tone you are after!

Re: What should I expect?

Well, congrats on the new axe!! I wont be much help as Im not familiar with many of Gibsons pickups and TBH, not liked the ones Ive had experience with. NOW, tonally, I think there are several Duncans that will give you better tone, BUT with the quick connect setup, that will require a gut and rewire. I had a Gibson with that system and it makes pup swaps super easy, but limits choices. Im not sure if Gibson even has all their pups avail with the quick connectors.. So, hopefully you will find what you need in the Gibson line. Many of the guys here have played many of them and Im sure youll get fixed up

Re: What should I expect?

Use a 250k or 300k pot on the 490T and put a .001uf cap on the tone, roll it down........It works great in that configuration.

Yes, the BB 2 & 3 are a little thicker and warmer than a 1 & 2 set. All three are very good PU's.
