Righto so I have a beautiful B.C Rich Mockingbird Pro X Goldtop that is in some dire need of Seymour Duncans! It's currently got EMG 81/85s in there and I'm after something a bit more medium gain/rock n roll haha.

I've had experiences with SH6 and SH5 pickups, I've got a variety of SH6s right now in a warlock, a gunslinger/superstrat and a tele.

I have an SH5 in another gunslinger and that sounds great. Probably my favourite of the lot that for medium output and 'modern metal' application.

The mockingbird is used for metalcore and in Drop C#. I really like a low gain/high mids approach, so don't need or want a balls to the wall high output (I used to use actives but they make everything sound the same no matter what you put them in)

Anywho some pickup combination suggests would be great. The mockingbird is mahogany, neck thru, ebony fretboard. I'm a bit fan of Ola/Keiths approach to tone so my first thought was SH6, but I've already got a lot of them. First thought is SH5 in bridge + 'SH1 '59 in neck but keen on suggestions. Might even try the Nazgul

Re: What should I put in my mockingbird!

Nazgûl is for seven stringers.

I suggest the Gibson Tony Iommi signature humbucker.

Re: What should I put in my mockingbird!

What about the Seymour Duncan Custom Shop Tony Iommi Twin Hot Rail Humbucker?

Re: What should I put in my mockingbird!

ah it is too. I stand corrected!

I"m leaning towards an SH5 in the bridge simply cause I love it in my other guitar. Would appreciate some input on the neck pickup choice!

Re: What should I put in my mockingbird!

Since you already have experience with the DD & Custom and want something in the medium gain/rock territory, how about a Screamin' Demon for the bridge? I'd say it fits the bill, and it'd broaden your palate of Duncans to boot.

Re: What should I put in my mockingbird!

Id say give the 59/c a shot, the output is perfect at a 11.5k the mids are spectacular, great top end clarity with a hint of glass that shines with drop tuning, awesome clean, awesome driven. My favorite pickup. If not you could give the custom custom a shot, great mids and highs, pretty hot though, 14k. But still able to clean up.

Per the Gibson pup output cross ref chart, the Tony Iommi pup is a very high output pup.

The OP said he is not interested in a high output pup. Plus, his signature states he is an SD endorsee (and conversely, there's no mention in his sig of him endorsing Gibson pups), so I'm pretty sure he's looking for SD related recommendations.

Any overriding factor for why you recommended the Iommi PUP?

Not saying that you shouldn't try the SH-5 in the mockingbird (you should) but... don't be too surprised if it ends up sounding diffeent than what u expected. The gunslinger is basswood, and the mockingbird is mahogany. The latter generally has scooped mids when compared to the former.

Re: What should I put in my mockingbird!

Used to have an Invader in mine with a BL L500 in the neck, sounded great, seeing you want something more subdued I would try the Custom/59 hybrid in the bridge with a Demon in the neck....

Re: What should I put in my mockingbird!

Thanks everyone! Leaning quite heavily towards the Custom/59 option in the bridge :)

Kingswebe - the gunslinger in question is an older run with the original floyd rose and alder body. When not plugged in it sounds MUCH bigger and fuller than the green basswood one I have. That being said I like having a bit of variety so quite keen to try out a new pickup arrangement regardless of wood type. 59/Custom looks to be the right choice!

Re: What should I put in my mockingbird!

sh-14B and Pearly Gates neck great combo I think you would like

Re: What should I put in my mockingbird!

El diablo. (Biased opinion as it's the only passive SD I have a not so insignificant amount of time spent with)

Re: What should I put in my mockingbird!

A mockingbird has the neck pickup route about 1" closer to the bridge than a les paul .you can get away with a bridge position pickup in the neck .Like a bridge 59b or anything in 8-9k range might work if you were looking to change the neck pup

Re: What should I put in my mockingbird!

The El Diablo (Iommi) also has a lot of girth to it that may not blend well with that degree of a drop tuning, depending on what the OP's goals are.

I'd second the suggestion of the 59/C hybrid.

Re: What should I put in my mockingbird!

Update for all. I've got a 59 Custom bridge and a Pearly Gates neck pickup arriving soon :) really looking forward to installing them!

Re: What should I put in my mockingbird!

I have the same guitar. I put a sh5 with an a8 in the bridge and a sh1 in the neck. Sweet tones and very versatile. Of course, I wired each pu to be coil tapped separately ;)
