I've moved to London, England in the past half a year. I brought my HSS strat with me, and recently changed it to HH with a set of WLHs. My parents are coming over early next month and are willing to bring me one of my guitars.

I've kind of pared the list down to ones that would be useful for the styles of music I'm currently playing/looking to play, so it's a choice between my 2004-ish Epiphone Les Paul or a Squier Classic Vibe 60s Tele. Both are great guitars, both have drastically different sounds. I'm having trouble picking which one I should have here.

The Les Paul has a Custom 5/59 in it and the CV Tele is stock, though I'd be changing pickups in whichever one I brought.

Which should I bring? I'm mostly a jazz/fusion/soul player at the moment, with hints of rock and country.

Ps. keep in mind, these are MY guitars, so there isn't really a third option except Rob.

Re: What should I ship over next: Les Paul or Telecaster?

I'd say, ask your parents to take off the neck of your tele and load that guitar in the cargo hold and have them take the LP along as carry on. I don't know the company they'll be flying with, of course, but MOST airlines are very easy with guitars. I went on a trip to the USA and Canada this year, hopped on 5 different planes, 3 different airlines and no company gave me troubles, at all. Same as last year (6 planes, 4 companies) and the year before that (4 planes, 2 companies).

Taking off a neck is super easy. Just take off the strings and undo the screws. Couldn't be easier.

The LP given that you already have a long scale there and you play jazz.

Even if your parent don't take apart the tele to bring it in a suitcase, it still is a lot easier and cheaper to ship later with the neck off.

Re: What should I ship over next: Les Paul or Telecaster?

I'd say get the tele so you have a single coil equipped guitar.

This is what it comes down to.. do I want a shorter scale guitar, or do I want single coils? I could theoretically move the WLH set over to the Les Paul and move the strat back to singles if I got desperate for that sound.

I'd also like to add that the tele has a fantastic neck.

I've tried making a pro and con list, there are about as many pros for both guitars.

Then flip a coin.

In that moment that the coin is in the air, you'll know which guitar you want.

My vote is for the telecaster. With humbuckers and single coils, you've covered all the important sounds.

Telecaster.

J Page played one all over the first Zepp album and people think it's a LP. I've seen pics of Joe Pass with a Tele, and Ted Greene played one. So they can do rock and jazz. Not to mention country and blues. It will survive shipping much better than a LP. And if yours has a great neck ... well that's 90% of a great guitar in terms of playing it. Danny Gatton didn't need no Lester.

Just buy some thing there !!!

. . . go and visit Denmark Street ;)

Why pay big money to ship ?

I pretty much live on denmark street. That place is amazing, I end up there once or twice a week. And it's not really a matter of shipping, like I said, my parents are coming to visit me for a few days and they are willing to bring one of my guitars, no charge.

Not to mention Ed Bickert, the quintessential jazz tele guy:

Yep, that warm clear sound was recorded on a single coil equipped tele neck pickup. It's a shame that there aren't any good sounding videos (as opposed to just audio recordings) of him on youtube, great playing but the quality of the recording itself is terrible.

GOTCHA !

Still . . .look into that ML-3 . . . i for one, would love to have a black one soon !

Re: What should I ship over next: Les Paul or Telecaster?

To cover the most ground, I'd say go for the Tele since you already have a humbucker equipped guitar.

Can't believe you don't want to rob my house; I'm hurt man, really hurt... :disappoin

This is the best way to do it. Get both your guitars any way you have to do it.
