What sort of EQ would I need if....

Nerdy Nerd
I was to have a 12 string (4x3) tuned to fundamental/octave/5th per course, and wanted to "deactivate" or dull out the high strings for standard bass work, but then punch them in for heavy punk or metal rhythm work?

Thanks for any help

Hmm. Tricky. :scratchch

Re: What sort of EQ would I need if....

Not happening with an EQ. Any frequencies you carve out to avoid the upper strings in the course will affect the lower strings in other courses.

sounds like you might need a whammy pedal
i've only heard the digitech ones, but was very impressed with them

ah, I was hoping for a simple "stomp on it" answer. Thanks for the help, everyone.

This is one of those hopeful situations I'd like to be in, as I love the 12 string sound. I wonder if a piezo thing would work? A piezo bridge pickup deal would efinitely allow for string cancellation, but lawd at what cost.

As was said, this won't work. The thing is, each string vibrates at a fundamental, but there are so many higher harmonics that are part of the sound that will be part of the other strings sound. The only thing I can think of is a mute system for just the octave strings, but it would be a tough order to fill. Best bet is to use your 12 for the songs that need it and then switch to another bass for the others.
