It'll be used for a 50 watt mesa single rec. , i play a lot of darkish heavyish music (tool tones) along with some soft cleans stuff and some soloing. I want a tight heavy bottom end, with good mids and great highs. which of these should i use? It'll probably be used in an Avatar cab.

Re: What Speakers Should I Use...?

I have the reverb version of the same amp, and I like a more vintage tone so I use a Marshall 1960AX with Greenbacks. But for you I'd go with the G12h's and the V30s. It'll be an awesome blend.

Re: What Speakers Should I Use...?

I like Emminence speakers, mainly because they're a great middle of the road transducer (and cheaper), but if you're playing stuff that requires a tight bottom (and who doesn't love that? Yea, I know, old joke) and just overall clear reproduction, I'd spring for some EV's. They're expensive as hell, but they are just crystal clear. If you don't want to pay for them, you could try JBL's.

Another choice is 412 with a the X pattern of 2 Celestion 75s and 2 Celestion Vintage 30s.

Re: What Speakers Should I Use...?

I voted for the four V30's because I play the same amplifier as you and play your same style too - I love TOOL!! It's done perfectly for what you described, I love it - and doubt I will ever change my combo.

Re: What Speakers Should I Use...?

Greenbacks have great mid responsiveness. Another choice for big bass would be Weber Silver Bells.

Re: What Speakers Should I Use...?

Ive just been playing my ENGL 4x12 with all vintage 30s and it sounds incredible, but i had to vote for the combo of vintage 30s and g12h30's just because i think that would be an awesome blend.

Re: What Speakers Should I Use...?

You might like four G12H30's. The G12H30 has more bass than the Vintage 30 and the Vintage 30 has more treble. I love both and use both. The V30 in amps that need to be brightened up...the G12H30 in amps that are bright enough already! If I had to pick just one, it'd be the G12H30...it'll do it all. They are especially great in a Fender Deluxe Reverb. Lew

Re: What Speakers Should I Use...?

My dealings with these speakers are limited, but I really like the V30/G12H30 combo....and the H30 seems to be a good all around player. I've got the Mojo Greenback version too(G12M30) & was thinking of getting another H30....either putting them in my 4x12 (V30/H30 on top, H30/M30 on the bottom) or just making another 2x12 w/the H30/M30 combo....

I'd like to test a pair of Celestion G12 Century Vintage speakers mixed with some V30s.

I voted for V30's, because they sound good, and they're loud as f*ck.

I'm running four of them in an oversized Mesa Recto 4x12. In that cab they have plenty of thump, and yet remain punchy and crunchy at the same time.

Re: What Speakers Should I Use...?

ok, i think i'll go with the combo of 2 g12 and 2 v30's, i think it'll suit me the best, should i put em in an X position or 2 g12's on top and 2 v30's on bottom or vise vesa...?

They don't get talked about much, but I've always liked G12-80s. They'll take just about anything you can throw at 'em, I've never blown blown one. They'll never go mushy on you either, every note is distinct even with heavy distortion, good tight thumping bass and singing highs.

I agree about the G12-80s. I have 1 in my 2x12 cabinet along with a G12H80 and like the Classic Lead G12-80 alot. Just like you described it. It handles highgain very well without going muddy, fizzy or ear killing highs.

I'm liking the Lead 80's too! I have two Bogner 2x12's each loaded with one V30 and one Lead 80. The tone from this speaker combo is always tight with excellent mids and lower mids, and NEVER gets mushy in the bass - even with the "depth" control maxed on my VHT 2502 power amp.
