What Straplock are you using?

I just picked up a Jim Dunlop straplock system and it seems a little more secure than the Schaller type IMO, which I've had experience with before. I was wondering which simple, but effective straplock systems some of you guys may like using. Maybe I'm missing something.

Re: What Straplock are you using?

I can see how Schaller's can be less secure because the nut just goes through just a bit of threading and can be come loose. If there was more threading to go through, I would consider it the ultimate lock system.

Re: What Straplock are you using?

I use Schallers and never had a problem with them.

Re: What Straplock are you using?

I think the only reason I'm using them is becuase thats the only type the local shop carries .

Re: What Straplock are you using?

Schallers ! Put a Lil' Loctite on the strap screws and you'll never have a problem.

Re: What Straplock are you using?

DiMarzio cliplocks :] thought i wish the strap could get a bit smaller :-\

Let me say this about that...

Here's a couple of posts that I posted a while ago on another forum:

For YEARS I defended the Dunlops- more or less because that's what I was using, I liked them and they're easier to lock in and unlock. After several straplock failures, including the one that almost killed a 45 year old $5000 guitar, I looked at the mechanics of it, the Dunlops have either 2 or 4 spring loaded ball bearings supporting the weight of your guitar (depending on the age of the Dunlop lock you're using) . That's it. Those bearings fit into a trough on the female end of the mechanism- that's all that holds your guitar onto your strap. The Schaller has a cast metal cup that's held in place by a spring loaded plunger. Even if the plunger fails, the cup is more than capable of supporting the weight of most any guitar. (any guitar a human being can carry around) If the Schaller fails, it's going to be from the nut and washer coming undone. Loc-Tite, clear nail polish- something to keep that nut from loosening- and it's pretty much idiot proof.

This is new for 30 Aug 06:

When talking about that "trough" in the female end of the Dunlop unit- gunk can get in there- not allowing the bearings to grip properly and then there's the physics of the weight of the guitar wearing on the "upper" portion of the male end.

I just took these pics- granted these are older locks, but the wear is the same...

You can see how much toll the weight of guitars has taken on the shaft.

Notice the concentric rings from the different "female" ends that have been used.

If the nut on the strap end of a Schaller comes undone, it's because you didn't check it and secure it with loc-tite or whatever. The Dunlop can appear completely perfectly seated and fail.

Re: What Straplock are you using?

I use Schallers for the tone!

use to use dunlops on all of my guitars, but now I swear by schallers.

Re: What Straplock are you using?

Dunlop on the Parker.

LesStrat has two 1" pieces of leather belt with a small slit cut in them to allow placement on the pin OVER the strap. I never take the strap off. I would have done the same on the Parker, but I can't leave the strap on and still fit it in the case.:smack:

Re: What Straplock are you using?

You've gotta be insane to think the Dunlops are more secure than Schallers. Schallers are redundant, with the locking deal & the metal pocket they sit in. I started off using Dunlops, but after a few times of having the strap fall off when I THOUGHT it was secure, I switched up, and have never had a problem. It's also worth mentioning that since I started using Schallers a year ago, I've NEVER tightened the nut on either strap I've got them on, and after just checking, neither was the least bit loose.

Plus, they look better.
