What the Crap!!! Hotrails too thin?

Frito's Better Half
My #1 strat is an alder bodied maple necked thing I call Beat'n****. I've always used it for everything... slide to pop. I put a hotrails in the bridge along time ago, just incase, well, that incase came up recently and it sounded thin. So when I got home, I checked everything, and its fine. No shorts, its in series. I dont know. Please dont say I didnt do something wrong cause thats not what Im asking about, whats a beefier single coil sized hummy? thanks guys.

Re: What the Crap!!! Hotrails too thin?

How about the lil'59? A lot of people seem to really like it.

The problem with the hot rails is that it may be too thin for people because it's essentially a very "hot" overwound single coil. The lil'59 will give you a thicker sound. You may want to consider changing the routing to a real humbucker, but if this is your #1 strat, you may not want to modify it that much (I can understand ;) ).

Re: What the Crap!!! Hotrails too thin?

I've not had a problem with it being too thin - then again, I set up my rig's EQ, pedals' settings, etc. around the Hot Rails output and EQ curve.

Have you ever tried a Vintage Rat with the Hot Rails? I've been saying this for over 2 years and it is still true - the Vintage Rat and Hot Rails were made for each other. Get set-up through a clean amp, turn on the Rat and you are good to go. If I can get someone to host an MP3 for me, I'll give a good demonstration of what the Rat/Hotrails combo can do.

Re: What the Crap!!! Hotrails too thin?

What type of capacitor are you using? Ceramic caps sound a bit thicker and darker than other types with that pup, IMO. Or, you could try connecting the Hot Rails directly to the jack.

Re: What the Crap!!! Hotrails too thin?

The HR is the hottest production single sized hummer duncan makes. :smoker:

Unless you go with the Duncan Designed Scorcher, which is a touch hotter. :saeek:

Re: What the Crap!!! Hotrails too thin?

I really like those scorchers (tried a Jackson with them) plus you can get one from Guitar Center or Musician's Friend for only $30! I'm probably gonna get one myself for a friend's strat.

Re: What the Crap!!! Hotrails too thin?

my hotrails' EQ sounded like:
bass=1/10
mids=99/10 :p
Treb=6/10

and lacked output, which is ludicrous cause it was played thru a Peavey Triple XXX

Re: What the Crap!!! Hotrails too thin?

I dunno - I know the stats on the hotrails, but in my strat it just sounded like a thicker, hotter (!!! :P) single-coil. I mean, not really, but you know what I mean? Real humbuckers have a thicker sound...

I'm totally biased though - I'm not one of those guys who likes the single-coil bridge tone in a strat. I've had a hot-rails, a CC, and then a twangbanger and I have to say I liked the CC the best...

Re: What the Crap!!! Hotrails too thin?

are you sure? My hot rails in my strat is very thick and fat sounded. It has alot of chunk to it and insane output. It distorts even a completly clean channel if u hit hard enough. I love it, i like them the most out of the single coiled humbuckers. To me its a mini invader and how could you clal the invader thin? if you want something fatter i say go with a full humbucker nothing can top that.

Re: What the Crap!!! Hotrails too thin?

I played a squier strat with HR and it was dark and thick, too. More than my JB loaded RG. And i thought the Bass was overpowered for my needs. It had much output too....

Re: What the Crap!!! Hotrails too thin?

Either:
1. you can't play
2. the pickup is defective
3. the pickup is wired wrong
4. the guitar is wired wrong
5. your amp is set up wrong
6. you want a full size humbucker and a not a single coil size pickup
7. ???

Probably #6 :laugh2:

about #6 isn't a Hot Rail fatter than some of the full size h/b? I always thought that and found this when i played the HR too.
Btw my problem is always the #1 :laugh2:

Me too! A full size humbucker has a bigger, wider sound than a small Strat pickup size humbucker or mini humbucker...maybe because the full size HB picks up the vibrations of the string over a wider area of the string and maybe there's less phase cancellation between the two coils. of the wider full size HB. The Hot Rails, JB JR. and others have a terrific sound for a pickup that fits in the small rout of a Strat single coil, but if you want to NAIL the tone of anybody who uses a full sized humbucker you have to use a full size humbucker.

have you messed with the pickup height? .. sometimes, just finding the sweet spot can make all the difference in the world

but if you are looking for a full sized tone, you'll probably need a full sized pup

good luck
