There's some circuitry difference between the OD-1 and SD-1 aside from the tone control as well.
In the SD-1, the signal goes in to the non-inverting input (pin 3) from the first stage of the opamp to the second. In the OD-1, the signal goes in to the inverting input (pin 2) from the first stage of the opamp to the second. Yes, there is a sound difference when doing it this way.
The tone control of the SD-1 is in the feedback loop of the second half of the opamp just like the diodes are in the feedback loop in the first half. With no tone control in the OD-1, there's just a simple roll off filter there with a resistor and capacitor in parallel, like the SD-1, just minus the tone pot.
The input section has a couple part value differences between the two and in the output section, the SD-1 has one additional resistor. The clipping section is the same in both. A SD-1 can be converted to OD-1 specs fairly easily.
I haven't looked at the Turbo OD schematics to really know what Boss did in that one.
There were several different versions of the OD-1 through it's life, mostly changes in the opamp (5881 not being on, that's a tube....lol). The 4558 opamp from various manufacturers was most common but before those there were a couple others used, RC3403ADB and uPC4741C.
I'd love to get a hold of an old OD-1 myself but considering the prices are stupid high for those things now, I'll save my money, get another SD-1 and change it to OD-1 specs.
