My friend is allowed around 800 aussie dollars (umm... which is around 650 american)... to buy a guitar an amp.

Any ideas?

Anythings fine as long as the body isn't made out of agathis :P

Preferably hummers...

Thanks

Re: What to buy for $640?!

Are you going to purchase within your country or outside your borders? If your inside your country buy either one. Buying outside will be an ******* of shipping charges with an amp. What do you need more? What brands do you not want or want?

Re: What to buy for $640?!

Hey Bones

I'll be able to supply him with a tuner and cable... he will have to buy a strap.

Would like to buy in the country, but guitar prices are overpriced here anyway because of imports...

Any brand will do, not really picky, there's not much of a selection to warrant being picky anyway LOL...

All the guitars that seem to be the right price are just low quality and feel like plastic.

The Pacifica is the only good one I can think of.

Fretboard doesn't matter, wood doesn't matter (not agathis though).

Re: What to buy for $640?!

Assuming that he needs a better guitar because of you avoiding any comments on amps (no offense). Get a hold of one of those Edwards people in Japan. They make killer LP clones (Very very close to Les Pauls, hint). If gibson made a tiolet seat, Edwards would always be taking squats on it. Look into an Edwards, if not that, Schecters

Re: What to buy for $640?!

Wicked! Cheers bones...

lol, regarding the amp - I don't really see that as an important decision... the guitar is what he'll need to play.. because he's been playing classical for 5 years, and getting used to the electric would seem paramount.

I'd say he just get some solid-state Marshall, it will do the job.

Schecter sounds good, I've been looking at the C-1 Classic (for myself) for a while now...

Re: What to buy for $640?!

Iv gotta a Ibanez RG220 and a Crate MX120R for back up, paid around the $ 550.00 forthe both. Other than that, 650 aint a big bugget for both. Good luck my friend.

Re: What to buy for $640?!

And to you my friend. The Ibanez is a HH guitar and the Crate is a 120wtt, 3ch, 2X12 combo.

Re: What to buy for $640?!

Dude im from down in Melbourne, and here in Australia that money wont get you a great deal unless you go second hand.

I tell you for the best amateur setup for that price get a roland cube 30 for the amp (no contest!) and for a guitar look for a second hand epiphone les paul/SG or a second hand jackson or something with a floyd and twin hummers...you wont have a problem.

Re: What to buy for $640?!

But if your gonna go with a Floyd be sure that it is NON recessed(no cavity under the floyd so it wount go up in pitch)..Much easier to tune, better sustain, better intonation, easier to play as you can rest your hand on em and wont alter pitch, better tuning stability, and most imprtantly it doesnt suck near as much tone..The only thing you get with a recessed(floating bridge) is you can go up on pitch and you can add a bit more effects to your vibrato but IMO the Cons outweigh the Pros of floating bridges..at leats for a first guitar..

Re: What to buy for $640?!

Don't get a floyd period if it's his first electric.

The Cube 30 or even 15 is a great idea, those things rip. Don't touch SS Marshall's, unless they're the old VS series, 8080's or whatever. Line6 also makes a new 30W 1x12 Spider II combo.

For guitar, I'd say look around eBay for people selling the Rondo copies, the Edwards LP's, and Dean has a nice mohogany Evo for 99 bucks on MF and Music123.

Re: What to buy for $640?!

Thanks Racer, Young Angus, y2steveo and DeadSkin! I really appreciate the response... taking all of your comments into mind and I'll see what we can work.

Re: What to buy for $640?!

Would be a good idea, but this guy is a fan of all that tremolo crap - lol.

I'll talk him out of it. Tuning is a btich

Thanks guys :)

Re: What to buy for $640?!

Well if he does want a trem then he should definitly get a Non recessed as i said before, there much easier to tune and to chang strings as theres no change in required tension

Re: What to buy for $640?!

Are there stock non-recessed/non-floating tremolos? Or do I have to chuck in some wood under it myself?

That's actually a really good idea y2stevo.

Re: What to buy for $640?!

wolfies are stock non recessed, i suppose a second hand korean one would fall in the price bracket - theyr pretty nice

Rid uses one - but he did his up with new pups and an original floyd but hey that can come in time :)

Yeh and the benefit of the Non recessed is that if you have a chaper floyd licence as opposed to the original floyd then its tuning stability wont but really noticable as cheap floyds are much worse in recessed ones..

Also to any of you that own a USA Wolfgang does the peavey licenced floyd have smaller string spacing because i played an ibanex with a lo-pro floyd and strings seemed much further apart than from what i was used to..
