what to do with 2 guitars i tried to mod, but completely

Snoogles

Cranky-dologist
fudged up?
well, they aren't COMPLETELY fudged up
but fudged enough that i don't know what to do with them anymore.
basically, i got 2 Jack'o DKMGs that i wanted to do in the same way as the first DKMG that i customized.
i tried to strip off the finish. and it just didn't go the way the first one did.
then i gave up and threw them in my closet, where they sit today.

Photos needed to assess the situation.

i'm too embarrassed to post pictures. i didn't screw up the wood. just the finish... which is what i wanted to remove in the first place... well, i screwed up a bit of the flame maple veneer when i was peeling off the finish.

???
So you did screw up the wood then?
"Peeling off the finish" doesn't sound good at all.

Use this as an oportunity to re-veneer the surface with flame maple of your choice and learn some new skills.

You ARE asking what to do with your failures, so fess up and post pics so people can assess the damage and suggest the fix....

Or do you just want to tell us you are a screw-up, and leave it hanging there?

Replacing a veneer is going to be a pain. You'll probably want to refinish in a solid color.

actually it worked brilliantly on my first project
the guitar had a chip in the finish, and i started picking at it with a razor blade. and i basically just peeled right off. except for a few trouble spots that took a bit of muscling.
didn't work too well on these other 2 guitars.

ok, i'll get you some pictures
maybe i can have them repainted

Re: what to do with 2 guitars i tried to mod, but completely

Ahh, I see what you mean about peeling off the finish.

I think you got lucky with the one that worked, it's much safer to sand down to the wood, even if it is messy.

What were you planning to do with them? Re-varnish over the veneer or something else?

Have a look at Crusty's thread where he fixed his Paul from the wood up. It should give you both hope and inspiration man :)

Re: what to do with 2 guitars i tried to mod, but completely

Give 'em to me!! lol jk. Is it a paper like veneer? If so, you can peel it off, and go to uniiversaljems.com. Good luck bro.
