What to put in neck of ebony board Paul?

LP Studio, Suhr Aldrich in the bridge. I've been reading alot of threads that sing the praises of the gates but it seems it's always mentioned with a rosewood board. Would ebony make that much difference? I'm stuck between the Jazz and PG.

it won't have too much of a difference in sound from rosewood, just a smidge brighter. i'd say PG, the a2 should balance out better from the brightness of the board, as opposed to a brighter a5 jazz.

I have a LP studio with an ebony fretboard, and I found that the ebony makes a big difference in tone. I went through a lot of pups before I figured this out.

Ebony adds sizzle, especially in the bridge. PG has sizzle, so in my guitar they did not work. AP2 worked much better for me. Actually, the stock pups with A2 mags were pretty good too.

really? i actually thought it was just stained rosewood, the grain i've seen on those lp studios doesn't seem that much tighter than the other lp studios i've tried, nor did it ever seem brighter. guess i'm just tonedeaf:D

Unpotted 59's. More alive and 3-D sounding with vintage wind. Thats what i have in my Gibson 05 Les Paul Custom thats all mohogany and ebony fretboard.:D

Mine's a '92. I can't speak for all the others, but mine is definately ebony. Totally different wood. And in my experience it shows up in the tone. My friend has an 04 studio and his is real ebony too. His is not a sizzly as mine, but his overall is a dog. I think you can still hear the difference though. About as much as going from maple to rosewood on a strat. It's there, but it's not everything.

Thanks for the suggestions. Mine is newer, an 06, but white, which has the ebony board. Depends on the color whether you get ebony or rosewood. The stock pickup in the neck on mine sounds a little boomy and bassy.

Before you throw away the stock neck, swap the mag. If it's too bassy try an A3 or A2, but it may already have an A2. Do you know what model is in the neck?

Also try lowering the neck pup way down, and raise the screws right out of the cover. Tends to thin out the sound. Before you spend money, really play around with it.

I'd try just lowering the neck pickup as much as you can first. That will take away a lot of the lower register response. If that still doesn't give you what you want, I personally prefer low output pickups for neck positions and higher outputs for bridge. Try a '59 in front and a JB in back.

Thanks, but I'm not looking to replace the bridge. The Aldrich is not coming out.

IMO Ebony provides a much cleaner tone than rosewood, not dirty/muddy like rosewood.
Ebony is clean and bright but not hars or trebly like maple.
Ebony is the ultimate fretboard wood

Funny how everyone hears things differently. I would almost say the exact opposite of what you said, with the exception that I agree about rosewood. I hear maple as much cleaner than ebony, and ebony with a little sizzle.

One of the best LPs I ever heard was one of those abortions from the 70s with maple neck and board. Gross to look at, but wicked smooth.
