what to use for a solo sound?

i have an amp with a great rhythm sound.
i just want to get a solo sound putting a pedal in front of it.
will a graphic equalizer be the best solution?
i don´t like going through overdrive/distortion pedals cuz they color the sound and give me feedback.

Re: what to use for a solo sound?

the zvex super hard on.

it is the best booster ever. Seriously.

the SHO is great. I played a few SHO-based boosters and I have to say it really sounds like "more of your own amp", more so than any overdrive pedal I've tried.
It can dial in some crazy boost but it never sounds "colored".

Re: what to use for a solo sound?

For years I used a plain old Boss GE-7, running an upper-mid hump and some overall level gain. That pushing a Marshall gave a combination of moderate volume boost and more dirt from the preamp stage.

These days I have two dirt boxes, a BB Preamp and a modded DS-1. I mostly use the BB for a combination of clean boost and additional dirt. I use the DS-1 when I need full-on distortion.

The reason I switched to the BB from the GE-7 is that I began playing a cleaner amp. Through something like a Fender, a pure clean boost gave me way to much volume kick and no additional dirt.

I use an old Cusack Screamer. It doesn´t really alter the sound that much.

Re: what to use for a solo sound?

I have a MXR 10 Band EQ. Excellent solo boost. You can increase the volume and the midrange to allow it to stand out more. Definitely worth checking out.

Re: what to use for a solo sound?

what amp are you using and how overdriven is it?

actually it´s a Frankestein i made hooking the Roland Cube 30 to a 2x12 cabinet loaded with two Celestion G-12 S 20W and i`m really digging the way it sounds through this speakers.

for the rhythm sound i use the Rectifier model...so it´s pretty saturated.

Re: what to use for a solo sound?

You're using a modelled Rectifier sound that is already saturated. Whatever you put in front of it is just going to make it sound more saturated and probably not in a good way. None of the suggestions made before Jeremy's questions will be much use to you.

Are you looking for more gain or a volume boost ? I don't think the Cube has a loop which will be a problem if you want more volume. If you get feedback using an O/D pedal I think you have probably already pushed the amp to the limits of what it can do.

Re: what to use for a solo sound?

The real question here is: What do I need to do to get from the great rhythm sound to the desired solo sound?

Does it just need to be louder? Duncan pickup booster, or my personal favorite, MXR Micro Amp

Does it need boost and perhaps sustain? Can't beat a compressor

Does it need a boost and a shift in EQ to help the mids/highs cut through? An EQ alone will be awesome.

Do you want more gain and some high cut plus a boost in volume? Try a TS9 or OD pedal with the level up, gain to taste, and a little treble push on the tone knob.

Or....

first, figure out what you need to do.

Then they are nothing like a SHO, sorry. The SHO is very coloured. It's a thick, loud, syrupy, crackling beast of a boost that does not like every amp/guitar combo on either side of it, but when you do get it right it's downright monstrous!

with no loop you arent going to be able to do much. if you have that much gain, almost anything that you put in front of it is only going to mush the sound up with out giving you any extra volume

even an EQ?

need a volume boost and some mid frequencies in the picture...so i was thinking a graphic EQ in front of the amp would do that.

Re: what to use for a solo sound?

even an EQ?

well, yeah even an eq. you can boost the mids but you wont get much if any more volume.

with a good amount of gain there is no headroom in the preamp to give you more volume, just more gain from the stronger signal. if you cut the bass and treble and boosted the mids with the eq you could have a punchier tone that would cut thru a mix better but you wont get much more volume.

Re: what to use for a solo sound?

Sadly, even an EQ isn't going to help much. It DEFINITELY won't give you more volume. At high levels of gain there's simply nowhere left to go. For what you're trying to do you really need an amp with two channels which are both capable of high gain levels but can be set for rhythm and solo sounds/volumes.

Re: what to use for a solo sound?

The only option I think you can do is go the opposite and set you lead sound in either of two ways. Set it with an eq or boost pedal for what you want and then when it is off the rythmn sound or set an eq to cut the base sound (you use as lead) to get rythmn. Either way you could most likely only have a rhythm sound with less gain then lead.
