What tones can I get from the JB!

Re: What tones can I get from the JB!

What CANT the JB cover!

Ive got one and it does awesome heavy chunky stuff of all sorts, screaming 80s tones (especially leads), great harmonics, even great lightly overdriven rock and blues stuff, and if you drop the guitar volume down a bit the cleans are nice too although i dont use them much.

And it does much more...pretty much anything you want to play with distortion, the JB will sound great!

its name is jazz/blues but it can do anything with the right amp

There is nothing the JB can't do. For absolute face melting metal, you may wanna go with a Screamin' Demon, but I have the JB installed in two of my guitars, and think it's amazing!!

Edit: Forgot to mention, I have both of my JBs wired without any tone control, just volume. It's tremendous!!

Anything that requires a full bodied, clear, vocal sound that is NOT scooped.

Re: What tones can I get from the JB!

How will the JB sound if I use 500K pots instead of 250K pots in my strat? What are the advantages and disadvantages of using 500K pots?

Well, If you like clean tones, single or humbucker, you will find very difficult to get anything good from this pickup. Dynamics and touch sensitivity are quite reduced compared to a low output humbucker. I also has a uppermid spike and a lack of bottom end that makes it sound a bit "cold". But this characteristic makes it a great pickup to cut thru the mix and let the other intruments do their job. All the dynamics and touch sensitivity problems disapear when you push the gain a bit.

Then it just becames what is famous for...

Really? I always thought the "JB" was designed for "Jeff Beck".

The JB is one of my favourite pickups. I find it to be extremely versatile... it splits really well and sounds great in parallel mode as well. It also sounds fantastic in the middle position (like on a 3-pickup Les Paul or Kramer Nightswan kind of arrangement). Moving it away from the bridge helps it "breathe", and really opens up the sound quite a bit.

Re: What tones can I get from the JB!

I find the JB a little too hot for modern amps and I also would suggest a 250K to 300k volume pot to tame the upper mids.

i dont agree with you man, the JB delivers chimy clean tones. if you split it, it sounds 80% like a strat does. i dont think 'touch sensitivity' is reduced, but we just might differ in thought.
it does have the upper mid spike which SCREAMS! but it does NOT lack the bottom end. at least in medium to high gain situations. the palm mutes are brewtal not just brutal. if you drop D it, it will growl the lower you drop it the more it growls, but still the clarity remains. it's an awesome pickup in all situations, but it can scream a bit too much if you got it in a bright axe IMO
if you want it's real sound you better have 500k pots in it. 250 and 300k pots will reduce it's character a bit if you ask me (reduce the scream also, but thats a problem only when you play in your bedroom. in a band situation it will cut throgh the mix with it's distinctive flavor)

just my $0.02

I have to agree with Davey. Although i have a JB in an ash/maple guitar with a 500k volume and no tone control, the JB is not overly bright.

I would say it is crisp and clear. Sings with gain, purrs when guitar volume is lowered and when spilt with a middle single does a nice strat impression.
The perfect pickup.... for me so far.
