What Tube Amp do you use?

Re: What Tube Amp do you use?

Currently a single channel clone of an 18w Marshall 1974x pushing 2x 8ohm speakers in parallel. Not as loud as your guys' rigs but plenty loud for me haha.

I would like to build a kind of hybrid amp - 1974x single channel into an ac30 power amp and celestion blues. Pie in the sky though don't have any parts/plans/schematics drawn out yet.

Re: What Tube Amp do you use?

Lots of Marshall amps mentioned :) It would be interesting to see which brand is preferred by forum members.

Re: What Tube Amp do you use?

1983 JCM800 2204 (Modded)
1987 JCM800 2210 (Modded)
Peavey Classic 60/60 that I run my JMP-1 into

That's it for tube! Power sections anyway...

Re: What Tube Amp do you use?

I have:

'68 Princeton Reverb. All original except tubes, and the speaker has been re-coned once or twice. It was my dad's since '74 or so; I got it when he died about 10 years ago. It's my go-to amp for juicy vintage Fender tones, and it's one of the best sounding amps I've ever heard. But it's not a good live amp for a loud band. It just doesn't have enough headroom or move enough air.

'95 Ampeg J12-T. Great sounding "modern" Ampeg. 1x12, 15W with EL84's. This is what I'd call my overall "go-to" amp. Same sort of thing as the Princeton, but fills the room a bit better, and is a hair nastier. Not much tone control, but it makes pretty much any guitar sound great. It's what I plug in to if I just want to plug-n-play.

'63 Gibson Skylark. Little 4.5W beater, kind of like a Champ. It has two controls: on/off and volume. Has a great scrappy dirt sound when you dime it. It's a bit thin on the lower volume settings - really could use some reverb down there. Good amp for recording the odd part here or there (it has that one great dirt tone - very Mick Ralphsey), or for quiet jam sessions when playing with singers and acoustic instruments. It's extremely lightweight, and extremely beat up (I found it in an abandoned house in the desert and brought it back to life), so it's a great kick-around amp.

'12 Mesa Express Plus 5:25. This is the versatile "tweaker" amp in the arsenal. It can do anything. If I don't mind spending time dialing it in to perfection, this is the "main tool" amp of mine. If it was more reliable, I'd be more likely to gig with it, but it has a tendency to fry power tubes.

Ampeg V4/cab. The monster. Very versatile, very loud. I rarely use it, but if I was in a seriously loud and hard band, it would be the amp.

Ampeg Super Rocket. Channel switcher, but otherwise pretty much like a Twin Reverb. A powerful 100W, loud, clean, and heavy, 2x12 combo. I really rarely use it, as it is hard to tame, and not much else can keep up with it. It wants to run at full blast or not at all.

Ampeg Reverberocket Head (R-50H)/cab. In between the Jet II and the Super Rocket. I like having a powerful, but not too powerful, head that I can bring with and throw on a backline cab. This one I have gigged with quite a bit.

Re: What Tube Amp do you use?

AC15, Bugera V5, Randall RD5, and a Jim Root Terror. I may get rid of a couple of these and get a bigger Randall.

Re: What Tube Amp do you use?

I have Blackstar HT-5, Ceriatone JCM 800 2204 and Randall Diavlo RD 45 tube amps. from all of these i am using the Randall most of the time those days. i have no plan on getting another amp. Ceriatone is a good one but it's too damn loud for the appartement. Diavlo is good on all volume settings and the sounds are the most usable for what i am trying to achive now. HT-5 is good for the blues. i have one more, Blackheart Handsome Devil, but that one is waiting for the repair.

Re: What Tube Amp do you use?

Back when this thread started, I think I was prolly using a Carvin MTS3212. These days I play either a Splawn Quickrod, 84 (I think) JCM800 2203 (modded) or PV Ultra plus. My main amp is my little Purple Smokey tho... haha

Re: What Tube Amp do you use?

Peavey 6505+ for band stuff. For home practice and teaching I use a Marshall MG15R (so I don't annoy the neighbours).

Re: What Tube Amp do you use?

I bought this one a year or two ago and I still love it, a Swart AST Pro.

Why? It's kinda the best tricked out 6V6 Fender that Fender has never made. 1X12'' with an Alnico Gold it gets good headroom and a fair amount of volume. It doesn't have a lot of tubes, it's fairly straightforward, has some really great response and shimmer and the reverb and trem are world class. Only thing that would make it better is if I could footswitch to some sort of a crunch channel like a Carr 6V Slant. It is extremely responsive though and with the Night Light attenuator I can get some sweet tweed-ish grind out of it; for now I use it mostly with a more blackface kinda clean and push it with some Cornish goodness.
