Re: What Tubes are in Your Tube Amps?
My DIY "13 Watter" uses ECL86 output tubes, sort of a 3/4-size EL84 and half a 12AX7 in one bottle. There's no current production of this tube. Right now it has a mis-matched pair of tubes, one original Bogen and a cheapo that someone send me for free. No sense burning up good tubes for playing at home, since you can't hear the difference with the MASS turned down low.
If I were playing out somewhere, I'd dip into my stash: a matched pair of Mullards, a few Amperex Bugle Boys, some RCA and GE (some of which look suspiciosly like Mullards inside).
For the one-and-only preamp tube, I think I have a Mesa-branded 12AX7 in there right now. I also have some Sovteks lying around that sound a bit crunchier. All these were purchased due to their one redeeming feature: they were dirt cheap on eBay. I didn't want to put nice tubes in there during the development stage: there's no difference between a $5 eBay special and a $30 Mullard when they've got smoke pouring out of them.
Now that the amp is finished, I really want to pick up a JJ and/or a fancy-shmancy Mullard clone and see how they sound.
