What Tubes are in Your Tube Amps?

Re: What Tubes are in Your Tube Amps?

My Marshall 2100 has Sovtek WXT EL34's and Sovtek 12AX7LPS Preamps. I have tried EH's and JJ's also but, the Sovteks won by a mile!!

Re: What Tubes are in Your Tube Amps?

On my V32 Palomino and Fargen Epic 30 DC it's all about the JJ EL-84s. The preamp tubes are usually JJ ECC83s or ECC81s. I never really liked the JJ preamp tubes in my Triamp, but in my lower wattage combos, they absolutely kick.

Re: What Tubes are in Your Tube Amps?

GEC KT-66 for most of my 6L6 based amps (With dedicated heater circuits to handle the higher 1.3 volt load per tube)

RCA 6L6 Blackface for my 1966 Super Reverb and 1962 Bassman

Stevlana (spl) EL-34 for the el-34 based amps.

JJ 12ax7 for preamps

any rectifier available

Re: What Tubes are in Your Tube Amps?

My Marshall has TESLA's and RUBY pre's

Pretty ballsy sounding, though very creamy - not a ton of early break up. Tons of powerful mids and decent lows.

HOw much did you sell the LTD for GEARJONESER?

I really debated the idea of selling my Bassman LTD, since it really is a great amp. I sold it for $800, as well as a 30W SS Marshall Master Lead from '86.
I sold those amps, to free up the cash for my Roland Fantom XA keyboard, which I really wanted. It's potentially more useful to me than the excess of amps I had.

Re: What Tubes are in Your Tube Amps?

My Legacy is loaded with GT12AX7R Gold pres and GTEL34R Gold power tubes. BIG improvement over the stock Sovtek and EH tubes.

Re: What Tubes are in Your Tube Amps?

My XXX always sounded best with EH preamp tubes and JJ EL34 power tubes.

My 5150 sounds best with JJ 6L6's and Shuguang (sp?) 9th generation pre's.

Re: What Tubes are in Your Tube Amps?

1982 Marshall JCM 800 2204 stock:

Pre-amp: Currently Marshall (Sovtek) ECC83, soon to be replaced by New Sensor Tung Sol 12AX7s

Output: New Sensor Mullard EL34s, these are the best new production EL34s I have heard, and contrary to some rumors I have heard, they are NOT relabeled Sovtek EL34s. My Marshall actually has a really, really good clean sound now as well as an amazing crunch tone.

And not to beat a dead horse, but watch out for those Groove Tubes Mullard 12AX7 reissues. There is a metallurgy problem and the metal components inside the tube are causing a chemical reaction that causes all sorts of strange noises and tube failure. I got this information straight from a GT sales rep. Just a heads up, I found out the hard way as I’ve had four go bad on me, after the warranty expired. They sound great at first but they don’t hold up over time. If you have them and they are working for you great, but if you start to get popping, hissing, “motor boating” or what sound like radio signals from outer space, replace those GT tubes first. I guarantee you that replacing them with something else will fix the problem. I could have saved a lot of time, money and headaches if I had this information earlier, so I’m just passing it along as a “public service”.

Cheers,

CJ

Re: What Tubes are in Your Tube Amps?

Budda SD 80. tung sol reissue, Chinese, JJ 803s.....SED 6l6's
PV Classic - same as above! JJ EL84's.

I do swap quite a bit though. Sovtek LPS, EH, JJ's, chinese, JAN GE 5751
Like them all! Except the Mullard reissue. Waste of $$. Make lots of funky noises and don't sound very good. Maybe they'd work in a NMV Marshall or something, but not good with much gain IMO.

Re: What Tubes are in Your Tube Amps?

I've got a GT12AX7-M in V1, a JJecc83s in V2 and a GT12AX7-C in the PI slot and it friggin' kills! The stock electro-harmonix EL34's seem fine.
