What tuning for secondary guitar?

I'm going to get some super thick strings and try some wacky tunings for my 2nd guitar.

I'm thinking going down to B or A would be fun... Is there a tuning you recommend?

Re: What tuning for secondary guitar?

i'd say go to standard B and see how you like it. What do want to play with that kind of tuning?

No idea. I'm thinking metal would be a good bet but I'm sure some nice yet slightly devilish sounding clean parts will be created too! :saeek:

Re: What tuning for secondary guitar?

I use 11-48 strings in regular tuning now...

Should I get a 13 set or buy a 11-58 7 string set and throw away the little E (making a 14 set)? The guitar has a 25.5" scale length

i can't think of anything metal that uses wacky tunings, just regular droped tunings most of the time. Just drop the tuning as many steps as possible without slacking out and go up from there if you don't like it :)

Get a set of Not Even Slinkies, they're great if your going to drop to B. THey're gauged 12-56. There are some guitars that can't take that big a guage, if not then use Beefy Slinkies or Heavy Top Skinny Bottom. The GHS heavier gauge strings might be good as well. I don't hvae any experience with them though.

What kind of guitar are you going to do this with? You need to make sure the strings will fit thru the holes in the tunig machines. Measure the diameter of the hole and them go with that dimension or slightly smaller.

Excellent point... I need to check that. I'm doing this to my first ever guitar which is a Carlo Robelli. It looks a lot like one of the Schecter C1 type guitars.

Re: What tuning for secondary guitar?

If you like dark/"devilish" stuff, try an open minor tuning, such as open Cm or Bm. Basically tuning to C or B, and tuning the "A" and "D" strings up a whole step.

Re: What tuning for secondary guitar?

Not a low tuning, Try E A D G C F. It sounds pretty cool. For low(er, but not much), try just tuning your E down to a low B(For instance, "Prison Sex" by tool) sounds cool too.

Re: What tuning for secondary guitar?

I always get a good heavy but still tight crunch with Drop C, sounds the most evil to me yet not overdoing it.

Re: What tuning for secondary guitar?

25.5" Cort - Open C or Dropped C
25.5" Fender Strat - Eb (SRV/Jimi style)
24.75" Gibson LP - TBD...probably E or Eb

Re: What tuning for secondary guitar?

On my Jackson right now I'm using A E A D Gb B

13-64 strings :headbang:

Re: What tuning for secondary guitar?

Opeth used open Dm on their latest album if I recall correctly.

Me, I'm a fan of open C. (CGCGCe)

Re: What tuning for secondary guitar?

I reccomend the same tuning as your first guitar so you have a back-up.

But since it appears you don't want to do that I would say Drop B ~ Sic Metal.

Re: What tuning for secondary guitar?

Drop D and Drop Db/Standard Eb

They are nice.

DADGAD is fun to play with too. You can make some interesting riffs from that.

Re: What tuning for secondary guitar?

carcass use drop B, listen to 'heartwork' to get an idea

i dunno if they use a 7 string or not, but it's much easier ;)
