what type of amps did clapton use for the cream reunion

Re: what type of amps did clapton use for the cream reunion

I read that he used 4 of the 57 Low Power Twin RI's like I have. You also read in the Brit guitar mags that he uses Cornwells. The Twin would make sense considering the long time endorsement deal he has with Fender, plus the fact that with the Twin, Fender is finally competing on an equal footing with the tweed boutique builders.

Clapton's been more than happy to ignore the terms of any exclusivity with an endorsement deal. On the "From The Cradle" tour he spent at least half of his time playing Gibsons.

Plain and simple, the guy's playing the gear he likes now because he can.

Previous to the Twins he was playing Cornfords if I recall. Fender just figured out how to make a Twin right again!

Cornell Combos. Great amps that are hand wired point to point with quality components.

(During rehearsals they tried using Marshells & gibbsons But Jack said "It just did'nt work"
I got that from an interveiw on the DVD)

At The Royal Albert Hall Concerts, Eric used:
Black Fender Strat with noiseless pickups and a maple neck (another black Strat with Lace Sensor pickups).
Jim Dunlop strap locks.
Fender '57 tweed Twin amp, in a stack, with a spare on top (only used on “Sunshine Of Your Love”) and a Leslie speaker.
The Leslie had a separate preamp, used to balance out tone and volumes with the amp when used together.
He also had a Dunlop wah-wah pedal in line.
His wireless system was the Samson Synth 6 system, with packs powered by 2 AA batteries. This ran to the input of his foot-switching unit through a Zaola cable from the cannon out on the Samson.
His guitar straps were by Ernie Ball, as were his picks and his strings (''Slinkys'' 10 13 17 26 36 46 gauges).
Guitar stands by Tama.
This information was graciously provided by Eric's guitar technician Lee Dickson.

In Photo's and the DVD behind the 4 amps on show there was a couple of Clapton Cornell Combos The 40/80 click on the Eric Amp

I read a story with Claptons tech talking about how hard it was for them to find all the right transformers and parts to make up his 57 Twins... they are customized amps for sure.... fair bit of gain to them even with the mid boost of the strat turned down....

Re: what type of amps did clapton use for the cream reunion

The previous owner of my Twin retubed the preamp section with NOS 12AY7's like the original. (but he retained the GT 6L6GE's cause they do just fine) I also played with with the standard 12AX7 setuo and they both sound fantastic. Interesting how versatile a simple old circuit can be.

Re: what type of amps did clapton use for the cream reunion

its nice to see fender making a tweed twin, but i wouldnt say they are up to the boutique standard. play a victoria 50212 or tweedy pie 2x12 and the fender doesnt stack up so well.
for fender its a great new amp, but they are made to a price which the boutique guys (hopefully) dont.

and while they arent marshalls, marshalls came from tweed fenders

A BIG +1!!!

Re: what type of amps did clapton use for the cream reunion

another ditto

a friend and I A/Bed the Fender with a Victoria. He bought the Victoria.
It's likely that several of the boutique guys have as much or more experience building hand wired amps than anyone at the Big F nowadays.

Clapton's favorite amp for years was an old Tweed Twin that Cesar Diaz repaired. Still, it was just not road worthy.

the Fender has Mercury Magnetics trannies, btw.

Wow! You got the inside scoop on this one. Excellent!

Re: what type of amps did clapton use for the cream reunion

Maybe the retube, etc, on my Twin made a difference, but it sures sounds as good as the boutique stuff i have heard, which is mostly Victoria, Holland, etc. from a few years back. The stock Twin that i played thorugh sounded pretty darn good too. By the way, I got mine for $1500. :27: Try that with a high powered Victoria:chairfall Maybe the Vic is a little better, but this is the one "factory" amp with which i feel no pressig need to make any mods or part switches. As for Fender's experience with handwired stuff, let us not forget that they have been making the Vibro-King for at least 12 years, so they have had some practice:fingersx:

Tweed twin eh..? Were they very different beasts from the Blackface models?

Re: what type of amps did clapton use for the cream reunion

I saw the Cream reunion tour here in NY at the Garden. Here is a link to a thread about it.

Bottom line.......... he used his Signature EC Strat on everything except when he played slide he used an older one with lace sensors instead of the noiseless pups. HE used 4 Tweed Twins that he switched between for different settings and songs and he had a Leslie and a reverb unit as well.

Very different, the tweed twin (assuming it's using the same circut as the original 1958) has a preamp much like a tweed bassman, but a two tubes in parallel, tube rectifier, in the power supply, and four 6L6 type power tubes.

As I think about it, that is very much the formula of a higher powered Blues Breaker!
