Re: What Type Of Guitar Pick Do You Use?

Invalid poll. No Rob option. No thumb/fingertips/fingernails option.

Personally, I don't consider any part of my body a guitar pick. ;) Sure you can strum and pick with your fingers: I use my fingers when fingerpicking, strumming, plucking, tapping, etc. but that doesn't mean my finger is a pick. You saying its not a valid poll for not including fingers (when the poll asks about guitar picks) is like saying a poll about "what type of car do you use" is not valid because you didn't say legs/feet... ;)

Also, what is the "Rob" Option? I've seen it on some polls and not on others--so not everyone making a poll uses one.

Re: What Type Of Guitar Pick Do You Use?

I usually use Dunlop Jazz IIIs with the Max-Grip thing going on. I prefer the Carbon Fiber ones, but have a reserve of nylon ones in case I run out. But I've also grown fond of the Dunlop John Petrucci Jazz IIIs, which are made of Ultex. They feel good between my thumb and forefinger, have a better feel, amd I seem to get a little more crisp of a tone out of them too.

Re: What Type Of Guitar Pick Do You Use?

I use a variety of metal picks made by Ice Pix with copper being my favorite. Ice Pix makes them pretty thin--I have a unknown brand of metal picks that are all way to thick for strumming--work good on the bass guitar though. I have several wooden picks that are nice too but don't ring out as good (IMO) as the copper.

Well, you already have two counts for "none".

The Rob option is, for some, the only option that truly matters.

At the time of this writing, somebody is resuscitating zombie poll threads, seemingly in an attempt to demonstrate the non-ubiquity of the RO. :scratchch

Other could definitely be a non--in the eyes of some it could also be something like a bow/ebow. With a limit of 10 options I chose the main ones that I've experimented with and then just picked other for anything else. I have made several polls and have only been on this forum since the last quarter of 2013. I have never seen a "Rob" option on any poll before I joined the Seymour Duncan forum. I am not the only one to ask--everytime someone asks they get treated like they were born yesterday.

The reason I asked about the rob option was because somebody mentioned it on a different thread around the same time somebody said the poll I made today was invalid for the lack of a "rob" option. I've asked on the thread of my post and on this post--and nobody has said what that is.

Re: What Type Of Guitar Pick Do You Use?

I even Googled the "rob" option in polls and the only thing that came up was a post from 2006 from this forum--nothing at all on the web about it.

Re: What Type Of Guitar Pick Do You Use?

No Rob option, no vote.

I mean you no ill, but maybe that was a hint that searching the SDUGF would have been more effective, because a simple search for "rob option" here quickly answers all important questions.

This thread is the very first result of said search: https://forum.seymourduncan.com/showthread.php?199509-Rob-Option&highlight=rob+option .

Long story made short: It`s an unwritten rule /forum tradition ;)

A pick is a pick, a fingertip is a fingertip. Techniques that you can perform with a pick are different from those you can perform with your fingers. I don't think that either is better than the other, but I do know that they are very different techniques.

Well, the last times I and another newer member asked we were treated as though we were morons. In hindsight, I should've searched within the forum. But to the curt remarks, I've only been on this forum Sept of 2013--that post about the "Rob" option was in 2010...so not something I or other forum members would know especially since you say its an unwritten rule and tradition.

Thank you for explaining it.

If you grow your nails a little they become picks. Just my .02

Re: What Type Of Guitar Pick Do You Use?

I think as picks as golf clubs. I have different picks for different attacks. I tend to use red or purple Tortex on the acoustics and mainly Brossard Horn picks on the electrics. I switch up depending on what I am doing, I use anything but felt.

Re: What Type Of Guitar Pick Do You Use?

I have quite a collection of guitar picks after 25 years of playing. I've also been developing more finger-picking in just the past few years. I like to mix it up and I believe variety helps give you a better insight and feel for all playing styles. I have a special brass pick I've had since 1988 that still does the trick today. I even have a stone pick I found on the beach years ago. It was a piece of shale roughly shaped like a guitar pick...it works great.:) The thickness is under 5mm but it feels good to use. I also have the 3mm Stubbies which feel very stable between my fingers. Lately I've been using Jim Dunlop Tortex 1.0mm picks which feel great and the grip and tone are excellent. I also have Dunlop Gator Grips 1.14mm which I get a real nice tone from. There's another notable pick that has a softer touch. I have a set of Traynor Delrin Jazz 1.5mm picks which are small, but feel superb and the tone is quite jazz like. As someone mentioned here on this thread, picks are like golf clubs and maybe even fishing bait.;) They all have different characteristics as long as they do the job. I don't think celluloid picks were listed on this poll, so I guess I'll have to give it the Rob Option.

I'm tired of perpetuating the Rob Option nonsense. It's getting old and stopped being funny a long time ago. If you don't use a pick, the 'Other' category in the poll works fine.

Re: What Type Of Guitar Pick Do You Use?

I mostly use Dunlops or similar nylon, but sometimes I'll grab a Fender medium. I also have a couple of stainless steel picks I use once in awhile. For bass I've used felt for a while, but have recently been trying some rubber ones. I think the rubber gets a real good finger tone. I also use nylon and plastic on bass where I want a pick type tone.
