What Type Of Magnet Is The Jb Pick-up Made Out Of?

For Some Reason The Seymour Duncan Website Does Not Tell You What Type Of Magnet The Jb Sh-4 Pick-up Is Made Out Of. I'm Replacing My Ceramic Stock Pick-up That Came With My Stratocaster Deluxe, It's Too Loud And Harsh. I Need A Sweeter Sound That Still Rocks. I Love The 498t That's In My Les Paul Studio And Want To Find A Pick-up With Similiar Output For My Strat So When I Switch Guitars I Don't Have To Readjust My Amps. Since My Strat Is Made Out Of Alder And My Les Paul Mahagony With A Maple Cap I Can't Just Put A 498t In My Strat. What Pick-up Should I Consider?

Re: What Type Of Magnet Is The Jb Pick-up Made Out Of?

like taphappy said, the JB is Alnico 5, but if you change the magnet to an oversized ceramic, you would have a Duncan Distortion, as the coils are the same. Some people really like the JB with an Alnico 2 magnet as well to sweeten it up a bit. (I have no experience with any of the 3 just repeating what I hear)

Tell us a bit more about your gear (amp, etc) and what style you're wanting to do and we can hopefully steer you in the right direction. :)

Alnico 5 And I am sure it is mentioned on the web site

Can someone verify that? They sound way different to my ears.

Thanks!

Yes, its true. They sound different for the same reason a Custom 5 and a Custom sound different. The magnet has a pretty big impact on the sound.

it is 100% true...the JB, Distortion and the Invader all use the same coils but with difference magnets (3 magnets in the case of the invader) and also different pole pieces on the invader...

The JB sounds good with the smaller ceramic magnet like used in the Custom as well... kinda like a tamer Distortion!
I just made JB/Custom Hybrids for 2 forum members yesterday which is a really great pickup with either A5 or the Customs Ceramic.

The 498 is voiced after a 57 Classic, so I would look into one of the Custom series pickups before looking into the JB. I’ve never used a C5, but on paper it sounds very much on par to the 498. The CC (A2) has more emphasis on the mids and is a little sweeter sounding than the 498. The CC also doesn’t seem to have the girth that the 498 has.
