What type of trem for my project guitar?

I would go for the Wilkinson trem with locking tuners and a LSR nut!

Yeah...

or a Wilkinson with a graphite nut... I believe the stock schaller tuners stay in tune as long as you have enough winds around them... I'm still waiting for my graphite nut...

Re: What type of trem for my project guitar?

I've got similar considerations for my project Strat. I wanted a trem system that had sustain, tuning stability and the ability to be 'Van Halenised' for a tune or two without needed retuning. I thought about a Floyd Rose, but I have a Washburn with a Kahler Steeler Floyd and everytime I need to retune the guitar for an alternate tuning or Eb tuning it's such a pain in the ass. I also wanted my Strat to have a classic look.

So I've gone for a Steel Block Vintage Trem from Allparts UK (I'm on a budget!) and Sperzel locking tuners. The nut should be cut well by the guy building it. Think this'll be enough for the guitar to cope with a bit of Van Halen?

I have a Warmoth strat that has a Fender Am Standard Trem, Bone Nut, and Locking tuners... out of all my non-Floyd guitars that is the only one i have that comes close to staying in tune for Van Halen type trem use with out a Floyd.... I can go 2 songs of heavy bar use.... But i also have to do a few things... One i have no string trees, 2-i tune to E Flat, 3-Trem only goes down, 4-use a trem oil in the nut.... I find with the extra tention of standard tuning it does not stay in tune well.. Eddie used Brass nuts and oil plus took the tention off his nut by winding the strings up the tuner.. Just enough so the strings are sitting in the nut with a slight angle to keep some pressure on the nut.

But for sure if you really want to do all the crazy trem bar stunts like Vai or VH an Original Floyd is the way to go.... My 2 guitars with Floyds i use for playing in bands much more then my other guitars as i know they will at least be in tune after Ice Cream Man or any of the others with heavy bar use!
