What volume do you usually put your guitar on?

What volume does everyone here generally put their guitar on? I've always played with it wide open on 10, yet my father always plays at about 5. What is the best way to get best tone out of you pickups and amp?

Re: What volume do you usually put your guitar on?

There is no universal best way ... depends on too many factors.
Generally, you want the power amp section of your head to be working as hard as it can, tho.

Re: What volume do you usually put your guitar on?

I almost always play with everything wide open, but I've heard some pros comment that pickups sound their best with the volume rolled back a little.

Re: What volume do you usually put your guitar on?

i generally play with the volume wide open at 10, especially if i want a really heavy distorted sound, but i tend to keep the tone knobs rolled back a bit at around 7-9

Re: What volume do you usually put your guitar on?

I set everything up for playing at 7. That way, if I want a little OD or a touch more dirt, I can move it up. If it's already maxed out, I have no room to move.

It depends of weather or not you play the amp too. What I am talking about applies to people who play barefoot, and use a lower wattage tube amp that is not channel switching. Most people turn the knob to 10 abd forget it...If you crank your amp to 8 or 9 or maybe even 10...you can lower the guitar volume and get a clean sound then get a ctunch tone by maxing out the guitar...most people don't do this anymore...unless that have been doing it for years...the younger players have switches and boxes to do the work for them. ON the other side Jeff Beck turns the volume to 8.5 ALL the time...he says it removes the buzzy top end he gets from his marshall.

I always have vol/tone on the guitar on "10". But my situation, using modellers into a mixing board, is probably different than most. I just counted . . . there are 18 level controls between my guitar and my speakers. (That doesn't count the "gain" controls.) :laugh2:

Re: What volume do you usually put your guitar on?

I usually play rhythm with the guitar volume at about 7 or 8, sometimes 5 or 6, then turn it up to 10 for solos. This is obviously a sign that I'm old. :laugh2:

Re: What volume do you usually put your guitar on?

Since I'm based around backbone grinding distortion, I like to keep it just rolled off a tad. Maybe 8 or 9 so I get some more clarity, a little more bite, and some transparancy. Ya know??

Re: What volume do you usually put your guitar on?

Everything to 10, max output, max tone can't go wrong. Any versatilly I could possibly want would have to be done with my amp or pedalboard (unfortunately, I've sold most of it and am still selling :laugh2). My rig is going to be turned upside down and inside out, for I have to fill this crave for good tone once and for all!

Re: What volume do you usually put your guitar on?

my ghetto paratice amp only has 1 channel so i usually turn ther volume down to 3-4 when i wnat a cleaner sound asnd then max to 10 when i need hevay distortion.

Re: What volume do you usually put your guitar on?

I generally run it wide open. I prefer to control with my pick. It does suck when you need a little extra push though...

Re: What volume do you usually put your guitar on?

Depends what im doing,

Cause i play lots of church stuff, there is heaps of dynamics involved, so often I play on 7 on cleans, 10 on distortions, and for softer blusey solos ,about 3 or 4. Full on solo's get a 10.

Re: What volume do you usually put your guitar on?

10 lol - my tone pots are bust as well - i don't like the idea of a capacitor having more influence on my tone than the way i play...

i just shift towards the neck

Re: What volume do you usually put your guitar on?

I roll off a bit, not shure how much though, just enough to do without channel switching on the Bassman. On my hybrid rig (Boss GT-6 into tube power amp), volume is on 10 with the tone pots rolled back some.

Re: What volume do you usually put your guitar on?

for the neck with rhythm stuff i play at 7 and for the bridge like the jb on distortion i play it wide open to get full distortion capability.
