What was Dimebags Main Amp?

Re: What was Dimebags Main Amp?

He was known for using solid-state Randall RG or RH100's, I believe but then he also stacked a lot of OD/OD pedals and various EQ devices (an MXR 6-band and a Furman PQ3 among them) to warp out the sound of the amp.

Around 2000 he got his Randall Warhead signature amp.

This is all from memory... someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Re: What was Dimebags Main Amp?

He actually switched to Krank heads a while back. Serious high gain tube stuff and built well from what I understand. He hasn't used Randalls since Pantera.

Dimebag wasn't seen using Kranks until the Damageplan ablbum came out in early 2004, i believe.

Re: What was Dimebags Main Amp?

I read an interview with Dime and Zakk from 2 years ago and they both used Krank amps then for some demo **** they did at Dimes house. At that time though he wasn't playing live, so your right, he wasn't SEEN using them until last year.

Either way, if your looking to get Dimes sound I'd go woith the Krank because its a handmade higher quality head than anything hes ever used in his entire career.

That makes alot of sense.....

...if you're looking to get Dimes sound, don't buy the amp he actually used to record with, get something else instead.

Either way, Krank is a shady ass company who'll never get a cent out of me.

I could be wrong here, but....

When he first started out, he was using some sort of tube Randall from the 70s or something.

CFH was done with a RH100.

Mid 90s he used a Dual Recto to layer with in the studio, but never live.

Reinventing the Steel (and after) was done using Warheads.

I don't know if he ever recorded using Kranks.

Re: What was Dimebags Main Amp?

Don't mean to hijack your thread here but concidering Dimebag used Randalls do you think I could get his tone from a Randall RG75G2 amp? I'm also trying to get his tone at the moment. :)

Whatever, so buy one used. Its a higher quality product period. I mean since when is Randall known for quality and tone? LOL. You can get Dimes tone with a super-scooped mid cut through any quality high gain amp. Theres a reason he switched to Krank, so don't take my word for it.

Re: What was Dimebags Main Amp?

itd probably be easier to get a dime tone out of his sig krank thats coming out soon just cause he said himself that he used all kindsa pedals and stuff in front of the randalls to get the tone he wanted, but with the kranks he just plugged right in.

and i highly doubt that thing about doubling with the recto....

Re: What was Dimebags Main Amp?

I had a Randall tube HT-100? several years ago, which I think is what Dime used for a lot of Pantera albums. It wasn't a bad sounding amp, but it really didn't define 'the Dimebag sound'. He most likely beefed up the front end of those Randalls with rackmounted OD's, and suppressed the heck out of it with noisegates, to tame the hiss. IMO, that's the Dime sound, although those Kranks will get you there as a plug in and play amp. Right after the Kranks came out, I had the opportunity to play on a Revolution 100 halfstack at blazing volume at my friend's store. It wasn't entirely my thing, but there's no denying that the Krank is a worthy metal amp. Too bad Dime didn't get the opportunity to make more CDs using the Deans and Kranks. Too bad.

Dime's 2000 rig.

I'm not saying this is the end all and be all of Dime, I'm just sticking it up for interests sake.

actually, damageplan recently said theyre gonna release the songs they had ready for the next album eventually, cause dime woulda wanted em to be heard. so hell be using deans and kranks on there i bet

Re: What was Dimebags Main Amp?

I can't imagine getting his tone without the "immediacy of attack" that a solid-state amp provides, even if it's a hybrid, like a Valvestate.

I'm talking Pantera tone, not Damageplan.

You might nail his EQ, or his pickup's sound, or even the "shape" of his tone, but it would be difficult (I would assume) to immitate that immediate sonic "blast" without a solid state amp.

I could shape my 2 x 12 Valvestate into an EVH "shape", for instance, but it always had that immediate "crackle" that only a solid-state circuit provides, no matter how tube-ish the preamp sounded.

I have no doubt in my mind that a Krank amp has loads of warm tube goodies. If I'm immitating Dime, though, I've got to have that icey immediate "zap" that comes from a solid-state amp.

Dime always was a bit dodgy about how he wired his stuff up and what the exact sequence was... however those amps weren't super high gain and their controls were rather basic so you KNOW there was some extra pedal gain and EQ going on at a few points in the chain.
