What was your first Seymour Duncan pickup or experience?

I'll start off, many moons back I started out playing the Electric Bass before buying a Strat copy a year later. I had a Watson P-bass copy, made in Canada. I had my local guitar specialists "Soundworks" in Ringwood put in what Paul said was a Seymour Duncan Hot Jazz pickup. He changed the original cream colored pickup covers to some black ones to match the newly installed Seymour Duncan and he changed the existing tone control to a second volume and added a third pot with a smaller matching knob for the tone control. Coolness! My first intro to pickups and it was a Seymour Duncan.

Mine came as a pair; a Custom Custom and a Jazz neck. Both went into my Yamaha MSG, replacing the stock items, where they have remained ever since (roughly 20 years ago).

Quarter Pound for Telecaster, 1980 or 81. The shop offered me the option to order the Tapped version. I was too dumb to accept their recommendation.

Re: What was your first Seymour Duncan pickup or experience?

Mine were a Dimebucker/Jazz combo both split with a phase switch in my 81 Ibanez Iceman. What an upgrade to the tone. I now have 3 guitars with Duncans and hopefully more to come.

I put some hot strat stacks in my axe back in the 80s. I wired them up parallell instead of series then wondered why they sounded tho thin! lol.

My first aftermaket set was a Jazz/JB in an alder strat, January 1981.

It was my backup for over twenty years.

HTH,

The first that I've bought was a set of SSL1's in 1983 (?).

I remember the "map" catalog offered by my music shop and my way to dream on the various SD models...

Re: What was your first Seymour Duncan pickup or experience?

My first Duncan was a hot pink JB that a buddy had bought; he wanted to do a Jake E. Lee thing and found that the DiMarzio SDS-1's pink and the JB pink didn't work well together. He ordered an X2N and I got the JB. It really opened my eyes about how much the pickup affects the tone. I still have the pickup and the JB is still one of my favorite humbuckers ever. As an aside, I used it as a neck pickup at first. CREAMY through the 5150 I had at the time.

Re: What was your first Seymour Duncan pickup or experience?

The first I played (that I know of) was a Screamin' Demon that came stock in a buddy's ESP Skulls & Snakes. The first SD pickup I purchased was a Screamin' Demon that I put in an Aria strat copy. There have been several pickups in that Aria, and my favorite is still the Screamin' Demon. Someday I may go back to it.

My first Duncan was a JB that I put in a 1993 Ibanez RG470. The JB continues to be one of my favorite pickups.

Re: What was your first Seymour Duncan pickup or experience?

A Custom Custom in a Jackson superstrat. I've been using it for more than 10 years and still sounds awesome.

Re: What was your first Seymour Duncan pickup or experience?

Would have been 89 was an Invader and 2 hot stack for strats

Re: What was your first Seymour Duncan pickup or experience?

Hot rail for neck in my MIM poplar strat but I did not like it (I was kind of newbie for this, now I know I did something wrong), so I had this wonderful 21 days replacement and got a Jazz neck. I totally loved it even when I am a HSS guy. So after all I could say my first experience was bad start with a happy ending :)

Re: What was your first Seymour Duncan pickup or experience?

It was the spring of 2006. Had a Epiphone Les Paul that I wanted a new set of pickups for.. Got a Custom Custom for bridge and a Phat Cat for neck.. I liked it, and I have been hooked ever since :)

Re: What was your first Seymour Duncan pickup or experience?

JB/Jazz into an L6-S, 1994, hated the Jazz. So did my buddy I later sold the guitar to. I think an EMG Select is what ended up in there, lol.

I think it must have just been a weird guitar.

JB

Yep, I started out with the best.

Hot Strat Stack - Still have it after nearly 30 years.

Re: What was your first Seymour Duncan pickup or experience?

The Quarter Pound Strat, around the early/mid 80s. Until then, I thought I needed a full size bucker for balls in the Strat bridge position. It was an eye opener.

I should add that I was using a Tube Screamer and a Twin at the time

I played a JB in the bridge of a USA Soloist, years before I was ready. I was used to Wizard necks and Evolutions; I didn't know what to think of this drier, less saturated, mid-heavy sound. In short, I just didn't get it. I still thought a pickup was supposed to overwhelm the amplifier all the time.

The next time I played a JB in a Soloist, I understood the tones I was after and how that pickup was used to get them. So when I bought my SL3 with its JB trembucker and Hot Rails neck & middle, I was ready for it all. And that's what I prefer now.

Duncan Custom for my Epi LP at the time. I swear it was like a blanket was taken off of the tone.

Then tried some DMZs and came right back to Duncans. lol
