What would be your pick for new speakers in Vox AC30C2

I'm not trying to start any flame wars on my first post here, been a long time lurker and have a decision to make.

I recently acquired a Vox AC30C2 two tone limited edition combo.

Am in the process of getting new tubes : likely Mullard CV4004 in V1&2, Mullard 12ax7 in PI, and JJ EL84s.

I have decided that I definitely am after a mismatched pair of speakers I definitely want an Alnico Blue style speaker for that classic vox chime and tonality and I'd like to pair it with a 55Hz G12H style speaker to fill in some low end and fatten up the overall tone (I play mostly single coils and have a few vintage paf style humbuckers).

So my question is which brand to choose Celestion, WGS, Weber, or Scumback? All seem to make quality products from what I have read. Maybe I'm over thinking it who knows just wanna be sure I make the right call as I'll be spending roughly $300-$500+ for the new speakers.

I'm more after the vintage Celestion styled tones described than the EV but thanks for chiming in

those are two great celestion speakers but pricey. ive always been happy with weber stuff too

I guess one advantage I think for Weber or Scumback would be the option of factory break in, I live in an apartment so that's a nice touch to avoid pissing the neighbors off.

I just hear so many pros and cons on X y and z speaker companies. Just makes it tough to decide.

As far as I'm concerned, the only speakers I'd want in an AC30 are either Celestion Alnico Blues (or Golds if you like to run the amp on 11 without blowing the speakers). Not interested in anything else for an AC30.

Celestion Greenbacks or Alnicos, or one of each.

Seeing as the thread title is asking me, there are no other options in my snotty opinion. Cost is irrelevant, Voxes were never cheap since their inception.

Re: What would be your pick for new speakers in Vox AC30C2

I had Celestion Blues in my AC30 and they were great (the amp was way more than I needed volume-wise, so my friend now has it at his studio). I've found that the Eminence Red Fang speakers are really good. In fact, I liked the 10" I have in an extension cab so much that I went with the 12" in my Whitney custom build.

As an aside, the Blues were definitely better when played in, but pretty good straight out of the box, so for me the factory play-in wouldn't be a deal-breaker.

Also, the two things that made the biggest difference to my AC30CC2X were retubing and, more importantly, taking out the treble bleed cap on the Top Boost circuit (fiddly but easy, and reversible if it doesn't work for your ears).

Essentially I am planning to blend a greenback and a blue, I'm choosing the 55 Hz cone with heavy magnet. This type of greenback has a similar output level to a blue so the speakers will be balanced in the SPL department, while some people like blending speakers with a 3+ dB difference id prefer keeping them closer. There are several versions of greenbacks I'm looking for a particular type and looking for insight as to people's brand preferences.

The question is pick Celestion, Weber, Scumback, WGS, etc

I don't care about cost and all that.

That's a cool suggestion I'll take a look into that after I retube and speaker swap to get it dialed in.

Re: What would be your pick for new speakers in Vox AC30C2

I replaced the stock Greenbacks for Celestion Blues in both my AC-30CC2 T.B. & AC-15C2 T.B. Twin, they're pricey but definitely well worth it once broke in!!! The same warmth that's associated with alnico pickups translates to alnico speakers so that warm and creamy VOX breakup just gets warmer and creamier. Plus it left me with four 8ohm Greenbacks to replace some of the speakers in my little lunchbox amp 1X12 & 2X12 cabinets too, which was nice...

Re: What would be your pick for new speakers in Vox AC30C2

if price isnt an issue then get two blues or a blue and a g12h-30 with the 55hz cone if you want a bigger bottom end. either way its gonna be loud and sound great

Re: What would be your pick for new speakers in Vox AC30C2

Based on the companies you're looking at I don't think you can make a bad choice

Re: What would be your pick for new speakers in Vox AC30C2

I figure if the G12H doesn't give me what I want I can throw it in a 1x12 can I have and order a second blue
