What would I be better off buying?

Re: What would I be better off buying?

There are no used ones so it's either new or none.

Do you want a used Gibson for about the same price?
Les Paul Studio - 800$ - Ottawa
P90 Les Paul Special - 750$ - Ottawa

Epiphones?
Epiphone Les Paul Ultra - 590$ - Ottawa
Les Paul Ultra (Upgraded Pickups) - 500$ - Ottawa

LTD?
LTD Eclipse EC-1000 - 800$ - Ottawa

You can get a much better deal by watching craigslist and kijiji for a while and buying used when something good pops up. Usually people are open to a little negotiation on price as well. . .

Re: What would I be better off buying?

Yep. You don't have to buy used from a store. You get much better deals online. The most I've paid for any of my gear buying online was $120 for a top of the line Cort 12 string.

Re: What would I be better off buying?

Is the Les Paul Ultra the one with the Nanomag? If so, I'd avoid it. Picked one up for my dad...plays "ok", but not as nice as my own guitars, and the nanomag has only had problems. Go with the Standard instead.

I'm a big fan of the LTD Eclipse series. They don't have the feel of a real Les Paul as they are lighter and thinner with a much slimmer neck, but you might like that if your Epi was too heavy. Personally, I'd spend the little bit extra for a 1000-series model.

No experience with the Chapman guitars, but they are nice looking.

While you're shopping around, take a look at the new Washburn Parallaxe series single-cuts. Some really good deals on eBay in the price range of those other models and they come fully equipped with Seymour Duncan pickups, etc. Haven't tried one myself yet, but I intend to.

I have previously owned 5 gibson les pauls and currently own a ltd ec1000 and one of the washburn parallaxe single cuts and can honestly say they compare favourably with the gibsons, in fact the sound and playability of the washburn is in a different league!

Re: What would I be better off buying?

I think they've long since made the purchase, given they asked almost 4 years ago.

Re: What would I be better off buying?

Tell me more about that ML2
What Duncan's are those?
What shape neck?

Re: What would I be better off buying?

The ML2 pro modern is a modern take on the les paul in its basic shape but has a thinner more ergonomic body with a ribcage contour, one piece maple through neck (24 fret 25 inch scale smooth heel) and mahogany body wings. it does not have seymours (which is a sticking point for me) but has chapmans own design pickups.
The shape reminds me of my washburn parrallaxe pxl10tbm........if it played and sounded the same I would go for one but am unsure as to just how modern the ml2 sounds and cannot justify the extra outlay for pickups on a brand new guitar. if a used one turns up it will be a different story though!
