What would you do? FAKE LES PAUL

Re: What would you do? FAKE LES PAUL

No way.

You got taken, so don't rationalize it by saying the guitar is acceptable. You paid for a Gibson (even though you probably knew that the deal was too good to be true), you should get a Gibson. If it isn't one, that's fraud - plain and simple. That's illegal.

How did you buy this one? Craigslist? EBay? Some website classified?

Agreed with the other posters that pics would definitely help, but so far it sounds like you got scammed. Those Chinese LP Copies are not worth $450. Don't just accept that!

Re: What would you do? FAKE LES PAUL

First of all, let me say I would LOVE a chinese knockoff to put some Duncans in!
Is that Bazaar site for real???? I think those are real Gibson photos.

As for the issue at hand.
#1 Verify the guitar as real or fake. Have a knowledgeable person do so. don't lead them on, just say "tell me about this guitar" and see what happens. Might just have a 60's neck...And QA could easily be sloppy on the wiring.

If it is real - you suck.

If it is fake -
#2 Real Gibson for $400. You KNEW that was too good to be true. You somewhat deserve the hosing you got.

But - before I get all in wad about it I'd seriously evaluate the guitar. You may have paid used epiphone price for a used epiphone quality (or better) guitar. And it's a conversation piece.

#3 If you are protesting, then show up ready for war with the seller - who seriously shouldn't have sold a real Gibson for 400 bones either.

I'm a fan of If it Feels Good, Sounds Good, it is good.

Re: What would you do? FAKE LES PAUL

The Chinese Fibsons are available in the UK, too. The chief UK distributor sells them openly as the replicas that they are. No attempt to pass them off as American Gibsons is made.

A friend of mine bought a couple of the LPs - a cherry sunburst Standard and a 3PU Custom Black Beauty with Bigsby vibrato. In the photographs that he sent me, the guitars looked the part. Certainly, no worse than Chinese Epiphone and Tokai instruments in the same price bracket. The average bar audience would not know the difference.

I cannot comment on the tone and playability of these instruments as I never got to try them. I do know, however, that my friend eventually had to admit that their tone was disappointing. He eventually sold them and returned to his Yamaha SG2000 and modified Stratocaster.

A good set up and pups can do amazing things for an average axe...

Yep. I got one of eBay a few years ago from a seller that made it clear it wasn't a Gibson. I think with shipping it cost me around $200. I put all new electronics in it except for the neck pickup which sounds great and I had it professionally set up. Along with the cost of the Brobucker bridge and hardshell case I bought, it cost me altogether roughly five bills and I simply love the guitar. I know I could have bought an SG faded for that green back then, but at the time I didn't know it. Anyway, great guitar and I use it a LOT.

There's some guy by me selling a Chinese Slash guitar for $300 but I ain't got the scratch to go check it out. From the pics it looks fantastic, but of course it would need REAL APH-1s in it.

Re: What would you do? FAKE LES PAUL

Having had a lot of experience with knockoffs out of China, I can say that they're not bad quality. But they certainly don't meet US standards (even Gibsons).

If you feel you got burned, do what you will. If you'd like to make a nice playing guitar out of it, it can be done, and rather easily as well.

Re: What would you do? FAKE LES PAUL

The only Chinese Les Paul I'm touching is an Epiphone. Some of those are really nice.

The crooks can **** a ****. I hope Gibson puts them all in... what's the legal metaphor for body bags?

Do a forum search for "counterfeit PRS".

Gibson's not really doing anything about the matter. You should find a thread under Sordid Tales (my alter ego).

I unfortunately have a good bit of experience in this area.

Re: What would you do? FAKE LES PAUL

Set neck MIC Les Paul Stds retail for $500 new, so the price isn't out of line, but used ones usually go for closer to $350.

The only way you'll get a Gibson Les Paul Std for $450 is if: 1) it's got a broken neck or other serious structural problem, or 2) it's stolen. In this economy people are desperate and they'll be lots of fakes being sold to the unsuspecting. You will not get a Gibson LP Std in good condition for $450. You might find a bottom-of-the-line used faded LP double cutaway for that price. You were greedy, he saw a sucker. Use your head.

I haven't got one for $450 yet, $700 was my cheapest, other than Dixie, but she don't count since it was spray painted.

On a side note, the guy who pawned Amber lost her for $500 to the shop. You'd be amazed what all deals you can get by hanging around pawnshops and offering just a tad more than the shop.

Re: What would you do? FAKE LES PAUL

There's not much you can do for the Fraud aspect. If a deal seems too good to be true, it is.

I bought my Gibson Les Paul Custom in 1990 for $450- but at that time they were cheap since no one wanted them- everyone wanted Kramers and Ibanez. I regularly saw Les Paul used for $600 back then.

My advice- treat it like you got an Epiphone- I'd actually prefer a chinese knockoff to an Epiphone. Gut the electronics, like everyone does on a epiphone, put some Duncans in it- the hotter the better to cover any inferior wood, and you have yourself a nice guitar.

Re: What would you do? FAKE LES PAUL

I wonder what this guy eventually did? He only made the original post, then left us hangin, lol.
