What would you guys do in this situation? (1 hum + 1 sing + 5way super switch)

My strat has a single humbucker (bridge - SD Invader) and single volume control (500k) in it at the moment.

I just bought a single coil for the neck, to add a bit of variety. Also got a 5-way super switch and 250k pot (with DPDT push/pull type switch on it). I only want one volume control and no tone controls, so the 250k pot will either not be used, or will replace the 500k.

How would you guys configure it? I especially need ideas for each position of the switch. Obviously pos #1 would be neck singlecoil only, pos #5 bridge humbucker only. But how bout the rest? (I want the most amount of variety possible really, but definetly want something resembling a strat 'quack' in there too).

Hi Avian - welcome to the forum. If you only have two p'ups, and only one of them is a humbucker, using a superswitch seems like a waste. If it was me, I'ld save the "super" for another project, and use a simple 3-way, or 5-way with the push/pull pot.

However, having said that, let me "doodle" a few things and see what fancy-shmancy options I can come up with.

Cheers Artie. I was looking at a few combos of half the humbucker in parallel with the single, and perhaps out of phase, and perhaps the humbucker on its own in parallel config. I know the superswitch is overkill, but now that I have it, might as well use it

Cant wait to see what you come up with. Also do you think 250k or 500k is the way to go with the pot?

Hopefully, you won't have to make that decision. What I'm working on now, will make the pot 500k when the Invader is selected, and 250k when the single coil is selected. I'm still working on what I'll select when they are both working. (Probably 500k.)

While Artie is doodling (LOL!) I'll jump in and add my two cents.

I'd keep it simple. Dump the five way and go with a Tele style 3 way switch.

I'd get a 500K push/pull pot and use it to split the bridge humbucker.

Then I'd just play the thing...

1. Neck single
2. Neck single and split bridge hum
3. Bridge hum parrallel
4. Bridge hum split
5. Bridge hum series

Or you could replace one of the positions in 2-4 with bridge hum split and single out of phase.

Thanks for all the responses guys, they were all extremely useful in providing ideas. I ended up playing with a few configurations, narrowing each switch position down to something that gave me (good) usable tones and a lot of variety. I quickly drew the above diagram, which is the end result, the wire colors correspond to what SeymourDuncan use for humbuckers.

1. Single coil (neck)
2. Single coil (neck) + Humbucker split (bridge). In Serial. In Phase.
3. Single coil (neck) + Humbucker split (bridge). In Serial. Out of Phase
4. Single coil (neck) + Humbucker split (bridge). In Parallel. In Phase.
5. Full Humbucker (bridge). (In normal series humbucking operation).


The sound out of positions #1 and #5 are obvious. #2 is a typical strat like sound. #3 is twangy almost tele type sound. #4 is a nice glassy yet textured tone.
