Flanger (mxr and A/DA) other ones round here

I believe I have most of the basics for pedals covered. I know there are a million pedals out there, many are diff versions of the ones I have,,, But... Im just wondering if there are any other pedals out there that are commonly used that would be considered a "must have" ? Im not talking something obscure that makes some weird sound that may have only ever been used in one obscure song. Please let me know what it is, what it does and maybe a song in which it was used. Im tying to complete my pedal boards. I have space for one more pedal on my board.. One pedal that comes to mind just now is a talk box. Others? Thanks!!

Re: Whats a cool and usable effect?

Just thought of another one that seems popular, but I have no experience with.. a Compressor. Whats the purpose of it? How is it used? What is a good one?? Thanks

Hi...delay and compressor are the two things you don't list on your fx. Of these two, compressor is critical. A compressor will give you extra sustain and articulation...this is done by making quiet parts louder and WAY loud moments quieter, thus evening the average dynamics to an overall louder and clearer performance. The standard of compressors is the MXR dynacomp. For a more "modern" sound the Keeley 4 knob compressor adds a "blend" knob which allows you to mix your original signal with the compressed signal. A more subtle approach, allowing for better overall dynamics. The TC Electronics Hypergravity also gives you a blend knob.
I have my compressor on approximately 60% of the time...It imparts a silky feel that is hard to describe but gives you an extra millisecond of time to think about where you want to go next in a solo.
I love delay too but if you only get one pedal, add a compressor.

Re: Whats a cool and usable effect?

Delay is conspicuously absent.

Also, never underestimate the value of a good Uni-vibe type OR a rotary speaker type effect.

Re: Whats a cool and usable effect?

Whammy, Volume, EHX Synth pedals, are a few that come to mind

Re: Whats a cool and usable effect?

OOPs!! Was late when I posted and I didnt have my list with me.. I DO have delay covered in spades!! Very Sorry.. I knew something didnt look right on my list.. I have a Carbon Copy and a digitech dl8 on the board.

Im going to update my first post.. sorry

Re: Whats a cool and usable effect?

Thanks for the input so far!! Ive thought before about a compresser, but didnt know that it would see much use.. Im really not familiar with how they work..

Re: Whats a cool and usable effect?

I like wah and many favors of dirt (OD, distortion, fuzz), but not really much else. I can take or leave delay, use amp 'verb, phasers are ok... Chorus and flange are pretty gross, though.

Currently, I run a Crybaby into a Green Rhino and Little Big Muff.

Re: Whats a cool and usable effect?

I wrote a blog on what a compressor does. As far as what you need, I would think that wonderful music has been made with a lot less stuff, so maybe just focus on getting great sounds and playing great music now.

Re: Whats a cool and usable effect?

I've got to ask, what kinds of tones do you think you are missing? You've got a pretty darn stocked board, so I'd ask what would I like to do that I can't or what do I wish I could do better. I do agree that fuzz and compressor are two big ones, everything mentioned in this thread is worthy.

Compressor is a pretty useful tool, from compressing the attack when you can't get your amp up loud enough, adding sustain for leads, backing off compression and adding level for a boost, and using it to limit volume if you have a box that boosts too much volume.

Re: Whats a cool and usable effect?

Exactly what I was going to say. I'm dying for one right now.

I heard and JAM Retro Vibe and went nuts over it. If I didn't have that I'd get the TC Viscous Vibe.

Good points. Believe it or not, Im NOT too hung up on effects, even though Ive been posting about em alot lately. Way back, I didnt know squat about playing.. Id plug in a couple of pedals and hide behind that. I quit that and over last few years, rarely do I use pedals, Unless Im trying to get a certain something. But. since I have a bunch of pedals, and my playing has improved some (sadly, not much and I still plan to used pedals sparingly) but since I have a bunch and they are in random places, I wanted to set em up on boards for organization and convenience. And, one tune Ive written sounds better with some chorus. So, still not planning to be a pedal fiend, just tired of it being such a hassle when I do want to use one. Plus, if I do get together and play with someone or whatever, its more convenient now. I feel that I have a very good base currently. In answer to the question, dont know of anything Im missing. Thats why Im asking. Plus, with the new board I built just for color pedals has room for another pedal.. So, it isnt symetrically (sp?) correct , and thats bugging me.. So, I figure if there is something that Im missing, I can get it while Im setting things up and be done once and for all. Thats it really..

Re: Whats a cool and usable effect?

I know the Strymon Lex rotary speaker simulator is one of the last pedals I'd ever get rid of.
