What's a good 12" speaker with a tight but not so prominent low end?

My amp has a ton of bass. I've even removed the middle panel on my cab's 3 piece back and am running the bass all the way down but there's still too much.

Is there a speaker that has a more subdued low end but is still tight?

It's a 7 watt EL34 head into a 1x12 cab.

Maybe a vintage 30?

Good call. I was thinking Eminence Governor, because the original poster described it beautifully.

And really? A 7 watt EL34 head? That's unorthodox... It must be a single EL34, huh? Do you mind telling us more about that? I've never heard of such a thing.

If you amp is only 7 watts I'd look at an alnico Celestion!

What is this amp and what cab are you using with it....also, what is the speaker in there now??

Guys, it's a Fuchs Lucky 7. 2 12AX7's and 1 EL34 non master volume. The cab is a JDesign 1x12 with a 3 panel back. 10" deep, 19" wide, 19" tall. Current speaker is an Eminence GB12. Bottom is too fat/round just as their site describes it.

I was actually thinking a Governor or a Vintage 30.

Do you think alnico has a tight bottom?

Vintage 30 fits the description.

And, if your EL34 is a JJ E34L I'd look at switching that out. I found that using them in a bottom heavy amp tended to make the overall sound really bloated.

+1 v30

The tightest bass in a speaker I've used so far was an Eminence Screamin Eagle.

The bass isn't *gone* per se, but it's not as prominent. It is wonderfully tight and articulate tho. Bright but not harsh.
Dunno if that suits your taste at all.

i think an alnico blue would be magic in that amp

Well, I went with an alnico but it may or may not be the "right" one. I'll find out in about a week.

Came across a deal too good to pass up on a WGS Blackhawk. It's a 50 watt alnico. Supposed to be in the vein of the Celestion Gold.

I got it for less than 1/2 the price of brand new one so if it doesn't work out I can flip it.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I don't know. Maybe a higher powered alnico wasn't the right decision. From what I've read, part of the magic of alnico is from pushing them, correct?

Oh well, if it doesn't work out it'll be yet another gear learning experience...............

Although if it doesn't work with the Lucky 7 it might be a good match with my Carvin Nomad, which runs on 4 EL84's.
