hey guys....im wondering what amp, either as a 2x12 combo or head +2x12 cab would get a good sound like the solo tones on "Ramblin Man"..... i love that sound, its not dirty, and its not the cleanest of clean either...... but it still is warmish and has good sustain and response....

what amps were the actually using anyways?

I play a fender super reverb head thats been blackfaced through an avatar 2X12 cab, vintage 30, 70th anniversary. nails the allman bros tone then throw in a blues driver and its blue skys ahead.

they originally used marshalls, ****ey betts used a 50 watt version so his toneis usualy dirtier. Duane used a 100 watt and it stayed a little cleaner. although a soldano can come pretty close to those tones

I think the magic combo is Plexi/JBL

That's D!ckie Betts on ramblin' He problay used a marshall 1/2 stack and
his gold top LP w't P-90's I'd say the P-90 tone is what your hearing and
like? You shoud have no problem nailing that tone w/t your Twin and a
P-90 equiped guitar(closer to a LP the better) :D
I've found by useing a APS-I in the neck of a Strat. If you roll the tone
control back a little,And bring the treble of your amp up a Lil' you can
get a Faux P-90 like tone.

Did he use any effects or did he just crank his amp? Also, does anyone have a link to Mark Knopflers rig?

temporarily :hijacked:

I'm pretty sure Duane uses (and swears by) Soldano SLOs.

I'm pretty sure that Duane is dead and has been since 1971...lol

Hmmm..I thot it was just the opposite. Duane used the 50 watters and ****ey used the 100s.... :)

Re: whats a good amp for Allman Brothers tone?

D*ckey mentions that his Marshall amp is modded to have more treble.

Duane used a fuzz box with a weak battery to achieve a little extra upper midrange honk.

thats warren. duane allways used marshall 50 watt heads, many of them as well. he blew them out like crazy because they were allways cranked.

****ey used marshall 100 watt amps, and also blew them out like crazy. hence why his sound is slightly more distorted than duanes because of the more wattage.

on the studio version of ramblin man, by the way, duane never played on. he was dead, sadly.

there is also some speculation that duane also used fender bassman combo's onstage, however, they were most likely used as monitors for greg and the drummers,

actually, it never went off. it was used to get a slightly dirtie sound all the time.

Re: whats a good amp for Allman Brothers tone?

****ey didnt use a p-90 guitar on any studio recording. on this he most likely either used a sg or the gold top

Absolutley correct. Keep in mind a lot of Betts' tone was not only in his hands, but he uses the middle position on his LP quite a bit. WHen I was playing a lot of AB stuff in bands I got that tone using an old Twin Reverb. You can get that tone with a variety of amps.

Re: whats a good amp for Allman Brothers tone?

i had to add that soldano in there because of Warren. i am not sure if he uses it with the allman brothers band but i know i plugged into mine and with my single channel amp i could dial it in with an antiquity loaded guitar.

Re: whats a good amp for Allman Brothers tone?

i guess he does use the soldano with the allman brothers band
