What's a good cheap start?

I'm looking at a mixer and a condenser mic for recording, something I can use headphones with. Do I need a sound card for this? I'm wanting to record guitar stuff with a sm57 and condenser and being able to use headphones to hear everything else. What's the best and cheapest way to achieve this?

Something like a Digidesign M-Box would be your best bet I would say. It acts as the interface, so it is the soundcard, preamps and all the rest with USB connectivity. There are numerous versions of it by different companies, but thats the one I have experience with.
