Whats a good chorus pedal?

I have a Boss CH-1 pedal, but it's always sounded rather sterile and mechanical to me. It work's fine but just does'nt seem to get it. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Re: Whats a good chorus pedal?

The Boss Dimension C is a really nice chorus. I brought a DC-2 off ebay, its the one with the 4 presets. There is also a DC-3 that is adjustable.

See www.harmony-central.com for reviews.

Re: Whats a good chorus pedal?

The Boss Chorus I like best is the CE-2...the little blue pedal. Mono. The other one I like is the Danolectro Cool Cat...it's stereo. I like either of those better than the expensive Fulltone Chorus/Flanger I just sold. Lew

Re: Whats a good chorus pedal?

Lew is right. The Boss CE-2 is a classic. However, I'd grab a CE-1 over any other unit in a second.

Alot of folks do like the CE-1...I've never owned one. The one I don't like is the CE-3. It's stereo but doesn't sound nearly as lively as the mono CE-2. David Gilmore has recorded with the CE-2. Lew

Re: Whats a good chorus pedal?

I have the Voodoo Labs Analog Chorus and am real happy with that. Nice transparent effect with a nice range from hardly there to max swirl.

analogman Clone Chorus - bumped my digital T.C. Electronics SCF right off my pedal board

I'm glad you posted that, Spark; I'm about to order one of those. The clips sound nice.

yeah, everything I have gotten from mike has been rock solid

Re: Whats a good chorus pedal?

I agree with Lew, I have the Boss Ce2, bought it new when it first came out (15 years ago?) iwoudn't trade it for anything!!!!!

Re: Whats a good chorus pedal?

Maxon CS-9. Complex tone, true-bypass, sweet high end, and does not kill your low end. It makes my Boss Chorus Ensemble sound like a cheap toy.

I tried lots of other units and asked for advice before I bought this unit. It's not cheap but it's very very sweet.

I have a couple of demos if you would like to hear them :)

Re: Whats a good chorus pedal?

I've tried every chorus pedal listed in all the posts above.

Here's my take...

Boss (Japan) CE2 is nice, but I found it added a little too much high end to my sound. Not as smooth as some other analog choruses.

The Voodoo Lad is cool but not as dimentional as some others.

Speking of Dimension... The Boss Dimension C is awesome. 4 simple presets and when run in stereo will compete with the best of them.

The Analog Man clone is very smooth and dimensional. Liked it a lot, but alas, I sold it and ended up keeping these two in my signal chain:

1. an old 1980's japan Ibanez (maxon) CS-505 stereo chorus. This is the same series of pedals as the TS808's. Has the best pedal based thick analog chorus in stereo. No true bypass though. Not a factor for me because I use a VHT valvulator line buffer and George " cables.

2. My new (old) favorite is the Rockman Stereo Chorus. I though I would instantly sound like Boston when I plugged into this thing... but, to my delight, it just dressed up MY tone nicely. This all analog 1/2 rack space unit actually delivers 3 effects in one if you run in stereo (which I do). Everything is footswithable. There is the chorusing effect which is very subtle yet effective and very natural sounding, then there is the MIX effect where you can go from a straight mono sound to a very WIDE mix where it sounds like you are enveloped in sound, then there is the "long chorus" effect which boosts the signal somewhat and adds a really tight (maybe 40ms) delay which is great for parts you want to stand out.

So, the Rockman and old Ibanez are keepers for me. That's my 2 cents on the subject. Now back to work:(

Re: Whats a good chorus pedal?

The CE-1 is the holy grail. However, it's expensive so I'd rather get a Jacques pedal or a CE-2.

Sounds really good. What are these worth?

Hey Stevo!, is that the Maxon CS-9 Pro chorus pedal or the CS-505 you're speaking of?
I've been wanting to try the Maxon CS-9 Pro but my local music store that carries Maxon pedals is not stocking the CS-9 Pro!
I have the Maxon CS-505 and it is the best sounding chorus pedal I have ever heard hands down, but it's not true bypass and I won't use it on my pedal board because of that reason! I instead use it mounted on a rack tray hooked into a true bypass audio switching unit for "Chorus" in my rack system.
I hate to buy pedals without trying them out first but if the CS-9 Pro sounds as good as the CS-505, I think I'll buy one without the test drive! :bigthumb:

Re: Whats a good chorus pedal?

I have one of the original T.C. Electronics Chorus/Pitch Shifter/Flangers, wouldn't trade it for anything. The flanger sucks though.

Re: Whats a good chorus pedal?

I had a purple Ibanez chorus once, sold it due to I did not use chorus very much.
Then I got a good deal on an Ibanez RC-99 chorus, with the extra mix and delay knob it really is very useful.
Love the sound of it, it does all the things I want from a chorus.

Re: Whats a good chorus pedal?

I've been using a Dano Cool Cat 18v model (sounds better than the newer 9v ones). Give a listen in the clips section, look for the "Hendrix-style thing".

PS - that's recorded using a TM 10, too :D One amp I'll never be without!
