i can't think of anything dark sounding on it's own, but if by dark you mean with less treble you can always use lower value pots. i'd say look for a used highway one tele set with the a3 magnets since those are nice 'n' vintagey with fat mids and highs, and get a 100k volume and 250k tone.

Phat Cats! Perfect in a Tele.

The Antiquity I Tele pickups are among my favorites, come with Alnico 2 magnets and sound sweet and chimey and not brittle at all.

You might also like the Alnico 2 Pro version of the Tele pickups. They would cost less than the Antiquiy.

yeah you want a2, not a3. a3 is kinda like a2 but with less low mids so they sound brighter.

antiquity I or alnico II pro neck and either the antiquity I (not the 1955, you want the flat pole version) or a jd for the bridge.

nice warmer and fatter tele tone that is still vintage sounding

Another important thing on a tele is to use the tone control. It's not one of those guitars where you get good results if you just leave the tone maxed out.
